Margaret Martha Sideen – August 23, 1927 – January 22, 2018

In loving memory of Margaret Martha Sideen, age 90, who passed away peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2018.

Born on a farm near Beausejour, Manitoba on August 23, 1927, Margaret moved to Dryden with her family when she was 14 where, except for two years when she worked in Winnipeg, she lived until 2010 when she temporarily moved to Rainycrest PCH in Fort Frances.  In 2011, Margaret moved to Winnipeg and was able to move to Bethania Personal Care Home in September.

Marg met Eric Sideen when she was working at a restaurant in Dryden, and on Friday, August 13, 1948, they were married.  A few years later, Eric built a house on the east side of Dryden, where they raised their four daughters and lived for 50 years.

Margaret worked at home when her daughters were little, but as they got older, she worked at several stores in town, planted trees for the Ministry of Natural Resources, and was employed until her retirement at Schmidt’s Greenhouse.  She was a natural at the greenhouse; she enjoyed working with the seedlings and creating beautiful hanging baskets.  In her own yard, Marg was known for her beautiful baskets and flowerbeds.

Cooking came naturally to Margaret and she loved to make jellies and jams, bake, and can fruit and vegetables.  Family and friends especially loved her butter tarts, cinnamon buns, strawberry rhubarb jam and Christmas fruitcake.  Her chocolate cake even won first prize at the local fair one year!

Marg loved family vacations.  Every summer she, Eric and the girls went camping at one of the many lakes in the Dryden area.  She and Eric travelled throughout Canada and the US to visit family and friends and they also vacationed in England, Hawaii and Mexico.  After Eric passed away in 2006, Margaret continued to travel to visit her daughters and grandchildren, and went to Puerto Vallarta and Cancun with her daughter, Lori.

Margaret is survived by her daughters: Sandra (David Black) of Winnipeg; Patricia (Jim Freiburger) of Calgary; Janie (Bill Hohn), of Edmonton; and Lori of Calgary; grandchildren: Scott Hohn, Rhonda  (Ian Woychuk), Rachel (Daniel Hummeny), all of Edmonton, and Colin (Ashley Black) of Phoenix; great-grandchildren: David Woychuk , Kate Woychuk, Dorothy Hummeny,  Braden Black and Bella Black; brother Laurence (Eleanor Boss); sisters: Sarah Auren, Doreen Olson and Sheryn (Don Gummer), as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband Eric, brothers: Arthur Boss and Herman Boss, and sisters: Clara Kriese and Elsie Kriese.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Margaret Sideen was held on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Manitoba, with Father David Black officiating.  Interment will be held at a later date.
