The Eagles girls’ soccer team was one point short of getting a bye to the NorWOSSA finals on Wednesday after finishing the third round of the regular season with two ties against the Beaver Brae Broncos and the Fort Frances Muskies.
The team faced off against the Broncos in Kenora on Wednesday, May 19 and came away with a 1-1 tie, with Lauren Shoguchi getting the lone goal for the Eagles.
The same result was posted for game two against the Muskies as the Eagles conceded a goal and rookie Haylee Whitney posted one for the team.
The two ties gave them 10 points, one point behind the Broncos and eight points ahead of the Muskies, putting the Eagles and the Muskies in the semi-final on Wednesday.
Coach Carlos Raposo says with the teams being so close, neither team will be a push over for the trophy.
“We’re pretty close. I think it comes down to the team that makes the least amount of mistakes is the one that wins. We have to play a smart game against Fort Frances and make sure we don’t make any mistakes.”
The team will have home advantage going into the NorWOSSA finals. The Eagles’ only two wins of the season were done on home turf and they’re looking to repeat those games.
“As long as we get the proper rest, I think at home is good for us. It’s always an advantage if you’re at home, you have the home fans so I think in that aspect, we should be favoured to beat Fort Frances but we still have to win the game. We still have to play it smart.”

The Eagles boys’ soccer team couldn’t pull off a win last Wednesday in Kenora but they’re confident they can change that going into NorWOSSA on Wednesday, May 26.
The boys faced off against the Kenora Beaver Brae Broncos on May 19 in Kenora, falling 2-1 due to a lack of communication at the back end of the field.
“They got an early goal because of a miscommunication in our penalty area. Then at the start of the second half, Kenora went up 2-0 because of a weak play from our defense not clearing the ball,” says Coach Conor Doherty.
The team fought back, earning a goal late in the second half but couldn’t find the equalizer. Doherty adds that he’s proud of the way the team fought back and played in the majority of the game.
The team faced a similar situation against the Fort Frances Muskies, falling 3-1 due to some mistakes in their own end.
“We had a very crucial mistake in the first minute of the game. One of our defenders decided to let the ball bounce instead of trying to head the ball, their forward got a touch on it and went up and scored and it wasn’t even a minute into the game. That put us behind the eight ball very quickly.”
The team fought back with Matt Bartlett earning a goal before the end of the half and the two teams were tied going into the second half of the game.
The teams pushed hard until the last 10 minutes when the miscommunication continued at the back end and resulted in another Muskie goal.
Doherty says that he takes responsibility for the miscommunications on the back line by not having the right combination of players to defend. He adds that the line will be changed up and the problem will be fixed before going into Wednesday’s semi-final.
“We have a lot of confidence going into the semi-final against Kenora. I think we’re a better team than Kenora and we’ve proven it in all three games. Our mistakes have really cost us against them but we have dominated every single game against them possession-wise and chance-wise. I very much believe it’s going to come together against them on Wednesday.”

The Eagles girls’ soccer team added two to the win column on Wednesday, May 12 as they hosted the Fort Frances Muskies and the Beaver Brae Broncos in round two of the NorWOSSA season.
The Eagles and the Broncos kicked off the first game of the day and it wasn’t until the second half that the Broncos opened the scoring with a volley over the hands of Eagle keeper Morgan Church.
The Eagles responded moments later when Lauren Shoguchi stepped up with a hard left foot on a sharp angle. Shoguchi made it 2-1 late in the game on a penalty shot.
Coach Carlos Raposo says the girls stepped up their game from last week but they still need to come out flying.
“The finishing was better and we played better defensively. The four people in the back played more defensively but I still think that our pace should be a little bit faster and pressure right at the beginning. That’s something we’ll work on for Wednesday.”
The Eagles effectively shut down the Fort Frances Muskies in game two with a decisive 2-0 win.
Halle Lobreau opened the scoring with a penalty shot after rookie forward Ashley Kropelin was taken out in the penalty area.
Both teams had their chances to add to the scoreboard but the score remained 1-0 until Shoguchi added her third of the day in the second half, sealing the perfect day for the Eagles.
The team will now be concentrating on continuing the winning streak in Kenora on Wednesday, May 19 for round three of the regular season.
The girls need a tie in each game to hold first place and a bye into the NorWOSSA finals.
Raposo says that the team is competitive but the competition is pretty stiff this year.
“All three teams are fairly close but right now, Kenora is the one that’s giving us a run for our money.
Overall, Kenora has more experience and so we have to go with the attitude that we got to play a good game against them and hold them down to 0-0, no goals.”
Raposo adds that what it all boils down to is that the girls need to outscore the other teams to set them up for the following week.
The first place team will get a bye and will have to wait on a semi-final match between the second and third place teams to set up the one game, all-or-nothing final.

The Eagles boys’ soccer team earned their first win of the season against the Beaver Brae Broncos on Wednesday, May 12.
Blair Dingwall scored early in the game and Ritchie Callewart added to of his own to move ahead of the Broncos 3-1 going into the second half. Kenora added one more just before the final whistle but the Eagles held them off for the win.
Coach Conor Doherty says the team dominated the game and got the chances they needed up front.
“We dominated possession of the ball and we gave our strikers more opportunities in the other team’s penalty area.”
The game against the Fort Frances Muskies was a different story as the boys fell 4-1. The Muskies scored three goals before Callewart added his third of the day to close the gap to two goals. It wasn’t enough, however, as the Muskies added their fourth, sending the boys to third place.
Doherty says the boys were discouraged from the beginning and need to step up their game if they want to bring down the Muskies.
“We came out flat and we didn’t respond to the energy and the effort that they were putting forth. We sat back and let them jump on us and we didn’t push back.”
Doherty adds that the Muskies’ goaltender made two outstanding saves to secure their lead and the team was discouraged by the two goals they scored early and the team didn’t respond.
The boys will have to refocus for their third and final regular season games against the Muskies and Broncos in Kenora on Wednesday, May 19. The team can’t catch Fort Frances for first place so they will be playing in the semi-final on May 26 in Dryden.
Doherty says the boys will need to really step up their game on?Wednesday if they want to get a win against the Muskies.
“We need to put forth a better effort, we need to communicate better, stay positive throughout the game and be patient and wait for our chances to happen.”
He adds that the older players are going to have to step up and take control of the team to keep them focused throughout the game.
