Muriel Joyce May (Strand) Gatey

Sunday, July 4th, 2010 at 11:20 am God called our beautiful Meme home to heaven to be an Angel to watch over us.

Predeceased by her father Aaron, Mother Lenora, Brothers Len and Art.  Survived by her soulmate &  husband Ed; sons, Edward (Audrey), Cameron (Lori) and Leonard (Debra); seven beautiful grandchildren which she loved dearly, Christopher, Sarah, Aaron, Michael, Jennifer, Marisa and Ally; her brother Gus, sisters Louise Strand, Evelyn Armistead, Alice Vivian and numerous nieces and nephews.

After raising her boys, Muriel began her career at Dryden, Ontario in 1983 with the Bank of Montreal.  With the family moving to Brandon, Manitoba in 1984 she worked at a teller position until promoted to Manager Community Support Office.  After retiring from the Bank in 1999, Muriel and Ed moved to Ladysmith to be near their two youngest granddaughters, Marisa and Ally.  After a very short retirement Muriel went back to work for the Bank of Montreal and spent time at many different branches, including Duncan, Harewood and Terminal Park branches in Nanaimo and Ladysmith.  Muriel worked for the Bank of Montreal for 25 years; she was very dedicated to her bank and so proud of all the Managers and staff that she worked with.

Muriel enjoyed the great outdoors and various sports, including hiking and cross country skiing in the Brandon Hills, Camp Hughes and Carberry Provincial Park with pals, Shadow and Taffeta.  She also enjoyed golfing and curling with good friends, Martha, Marg & Faye, in Dryden; Canoeing Northwestern Ontario lakes and the Assiniboine River in Brandon.

Muriel also had a dedicated involvement with St. George’s Anglican Church in Brandon with Rector Bishop Malcolm Harding, wife Marylou our esteemed choir director.  Muriel sang in the choir with Husband Ed. At Ladysmith she was a member of St. Johns Anglican Church until her passing. She dearly loved Rector Roslyn Westaway.

Muriel loved to travel and recently went on cruises to Alaska and to the Panama Canal.  She took a trip to Norway to visit her father’s native country; visited London, Belgium, Germany, France and Italy with her sister-in-law Helen Carscadden.  Many holidays to Dallas to visit her sister, Evelyn, special friends Leana and Chuck and Niece Alice and Don Gallip, who allowed Ed to drive their Suburban.  Muriel and Ed also spent many holidays with sister, Alice and Hal Vivian in Chicago (pizza), Newtown Penn (baseball), Murels Inlet and South Carolina (Brookgreen Gardens).

The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and radiation techs at Victoria General Hospital, Royal Jubilee and Victoria Cancer Clinic who gave Muriel such loving and tender care.

Meme you will be missed by all your family and friends.  We know you are safe in Heaven.  Rest in Peace Dearest Wife and Mother.

Leonard (Roy) Switzer

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of Leonard (Roy) Switzer on Thursday, July 1st at 2:45 p.m.
Roy was predeceased by his loving wife Violet in March of 2000.
Roy is survived by his sons, Roy (Shirley), Ken (Sharon), and his daughters Susan Clarke (Frank), and Janie Carrier (Steve). He is also survived by his brother Ken (Nora).
Roy was born in Latchford, Ontario where he worked as a butcher and in a lumber yard. He enlisted in the army in 1941 and was stationed in Holland as a mechanic. He learned his trade there and has been a successful mechanic ever since.
He married Violet in 1946 and spent his early years working as a mechanic in New Liskeard and Cobalt, Ontario. Roy and his family moved to Dryden in 1966 to take a job with Carter Construction to help build the Sioux Lookout highway. He liked the Dryden area so he applied for and got a job working in the bush camps for the Dryden Paper Mill. He left the company in 1976 to take a job at Sheridan Equipment where he excelled as a heavy equipment mechanic until he had suffered a stroke that ended his working life. He remained busy working on carpentry projects with his son Ken and commented that if he had to do it all over again, he would have enjoyed a trade working with wood.
Roy spent his last few years living in Pinecrest Home for the Aged in Kenora where he was visited often by his family and good friends, Matt Cedarwall, Nick Friesen, and Ron and Judy Nickle. He absolutely loved the nurses and staff and they, in turn, treated him with the love and affection that they would give their own loved ones.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
There will be no Visitation as cremation has taken place.
A Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, July 7th, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Dryden Community Funeral Home Chapel, with Velma Henderson officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
If friends so desire, donations may be made to Pinecrest Home for the Aged in Kenora, Ontario.

Carol Anne Valade (Foote) – December 24, 1936 – July 8, 2010 – “Our Christmas Carol”

Daughter of Scotty and Liz Foote, courageously battled cancer twice in the past seven years before passing away in the wee hours of the morning on July 8, 2010.
A woman of immense compassion, Carol brought comfort and happiness to her entire family and all her many many friends.  With a wicked sense of humour and fantastic high spirit, Carol saw only the best in people and constantly pulled the positive from life. She welcomed every new member of our ever-growing family and with all those she met, formed true and long-
lasting friendships.
Carol enjoyed the past 27 years with her surviving husband Marcel Valade, spending the last three years in their wooded retirement mecca on Eagle River. It was as if a higher power had a hand in last summer’s unexpected “family reunion” where almost everyone managed to get together and enjoy a chaotic and wonderful vacation at their beloved riverside home.
Carol is survived by her and Marcel’s four children and their families: Judy Terry and Ray Savage, Scott and DawnMarie Terry with their children Dylan and Cynthia, David Terry and Jane McInnes and Eric and Kristan Valade and their children Jasmine, Heather and Sage.  Carol is also survived by her brother and his family Rob Foote and Ken Smith with son Robbie John Foote and her sister Paterson Higgins and her children Dawn and Michael.
Following cremation the family received friends at their Eagle River Home Saturday, July 10th.
Should friends desire, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society may be made through Stevens Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 412, Dryden, ON P8N 2Z1.  Condolences may be emailed to sympathycard@shaw.ca subject: Valade.
The family would like to say “Thank-You” to all the wonderful doctors and nurses at the Dryden Regional Health Centre and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.  Their incredible personalities, expertise and experience made Mom’s difficult time so much easier.
Mom, I will miss you, my friend…
I will take with me always your tremendous sense of humour and wit.
I don’t think I laugh as hard with anyone else as I do when I’m with you.
All those hilarious
situations (that could only happen to you) I will remember forever.
You will always be my greatest gift, my friend forever, my
immeasurable mother.
Love, Jude
