In today’s world people buy all sorts of disposable things. Diapers, cameras, razors, and even electronics are obsolete almost as soon as you buy them! We change the decor of our homes and the type of vehicle we drive every few years.
One thing we should not ‘dispose’ of is our pets. Pets are not meant to be dropped off somewhere because they are not cute and cuddly any more. Killed because of their bad behaviour, or other numerous things too horrific to mention.
People have to realize that when they get a pet they are just as responsible for it as a child. You are responsible for its food, shelter, healthcare, training and discipline. You wouldn’t starve your child so why do some animals go without food? You wouldn’t leave your child out in the rain, snow, and freezing weather, so why do people leave their pets outside without proper shelter? When your child is sick you get them medical care. Some animals suffer until they die due to lack of care. Some even shot. You teach your child how to behave properly so they don’t get into trouble. Why not train your dog so if he does something wrong you do not beat him. People put children who they are unable to take care of up for adoption. So why do people drop off their unwanted pets at the dump?

This was written by ‘Michelle’ who spends umpteen hours a week volunteering at the Second Chance Pet Network outlet on King Street. It is the feeling of all of us who are associated with SCPN. Too many animals are dumped somewhere. We have received cats that have been dumped at the dump in a garbage bag. Puppies dumped along the side of the highway in -25 degree weather. 5 others were found frozen to death. Kittens dumped here on the ice road. Puppies left to die after someone shot their mother on purpose. How many others have died needlessly that we don’t know of. A lot I’ll bet.
I can’t for the life of me understand how people can do this to an animal. My wife and I have had pets for over 30 years. We have lost many and cried every time we had to put one down. It’s too bad we can’t catch those that have mistreated their pet and heavily fine them and make sure they are never able to own a pet again.
We are just about full at the shelter. No more room unless we start finding a home for all the unwanted pets we now have. We need donations of all kinds including people willing to help out. Both at the shelter and such things as washing blankets at home.

It horrifies me to see in this day and age, the number of abused and abandoned pets that I have seen. I and my immediate family members (brother, sister, and parents)have all been involved in animal rescues as well as running feeding stations for hungry animals. I have seen both stray cats and dogs eating at these stations, and the condition many of them are in is enough to make one cry. If I could rescue and adopt them all, I would. Sadly, I can not afford to do so.
We have however adopted several cats that were abandoned over the years. Many now have health issues that need medical attention, brought on by their having been neglected and wandering about. One had shockingly been declawed before being abandoned, and had not been neutered, so was in horrible condition when he was rescued by my parents. It still gauls me to think that someone would spend the money to do an horrific surgery such as declawing, yet did not spend the money to have him neutered! Happily he now resides with them in their home.
It bothers me that people can still adopt an animal without a background check or licence. If it were made as difficult for people to own or adopt a pet, as it is to get and own a gun or car, I bet we would see much better care being taken of them. But that is just my opinion…
I cannot understand those who called themselves humans and kill defenseless animals. I cannot understand those parents who allow their kids to buy/adopt a pet and then surrender the pet because the child did not take care of him/her. You know your children better than anyone, don’t you? It breaks my heart to see the many pets that are available for adoption because of careless people who think they are all mighty, and call the shots because of their notion of the strongest species – human. I go to shelters to see the pets and try to help whenever I have a chance, I have adopted homeless pets and love them dearly, they are my family now that my kids are out of my home and have made their lives.
Do you believe in Karma? I do. I also know that there are many good people out there waiting to help those who cannot help themselves.
