Shaun Edwin Peters – February 4, 1974 - May 15, 2009

It is with great sadness that the family of Shaun Edwin Peters announces his sudden passing.
Shaun was born February 4, 1974 in Dryden to Karen and Wayne Peters and passed away suddenly Friday, May 15, 2009.
Shaun lived in Dryden most of his life except for a short period of time when he lived in Whitehorse, Yukon.  Shaun’s biggest enjoyment in life was his family; especially his pride and joy, his son Jackson.  Shaun was very proud of the home and property that he and Donna purchased last summer.  He enjoyed building trails so he could go ATVing with his family.  He enjoyed hiking with his dog, snowmachining, fishing, camping, renovating the basement, and tinkering in the garage.  Shaun had a very special spot picked out to build his children a fort.  As well he was going to try and have his first vegetable garden this year.  Shaun was looking forward to the arrival of his twin girls.
He attended Hillcrest and Barclay Public Schools, then on to Dryden High School where he graduated from Grade 12.  He worked for Wayne Peters Trucking straight out of high school until 6 months ago when he went to work for Gardewine. Shaun made many friends throughout his lifetime and maintained those friendships.
Shaun is survived by his wife and best friend Donna Hastings, son Jackson Peters, twin girls to arrive in the next month Madeline (Maddie) and Emma Peters, stepdaughters Dakota and Sierra, his parents Karen and Wayne Peters, his brother and sister-in-law Barry (Karen) Peters, nephews Colton and Daylan Peters, in-laws Nancy and Greg Hastings, grandparents Marg and Stan Thomson.  Also left behind are numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Shaun was predeceased by his grandparents Helen and Bill Peters and uncle Ken Peters.
A funeral service was held Thursday, May 21st at the Full Gospel Church in Dryden with Pastor Al Huckabay officiating. Cremation followed and interment of ashes will take place at a later date in the Oxdrift Cemetery.
Pallbearers were friends Paul Costello, Chris Laforte, Byron McQuarrie, Ron Dyck, Uncle Bruce Thomson, and Cousin Ryan Runge.
Should friends desire donations can be made to support Shaun’s children through the Stevens Funeral Homes “Moffat Chapel” P.O. Box 412, Dryden, P8N 2Z1. Condolences may be emailed to sympathycard@shaw.ca subject: Peters.

Bert Hellsten – May 16, 1921 - May 19, 2009

Bert Hellsten age 88 of Vermilion Bay, Ontario passed away peacefully at the Dryden Regional Health Centre on May 19, 2009, after a brief illness.
Our father and grandfather was born on May 16, 1921 and spent his early years on the family homestead at Upper Falls, until the family moved to another homestead just north of Vermilion Bay. He served his country as a gunner in WWII and continued to be a proud veteran and Legion member after the war.
In 1948, he married Anne and moved to Thunder Bay to raise a family. He was employed by the Port Arthur Fire Department and later the Thunder Bay Fire Department, over a period of 27 years. At the fire hall, his cooking skills made him popular with his fellow employees.
Mom’s death in 1979 was a crushing blow. However, he recovered from this and went on to fulfill, one of his life’s ambitions. After retiring in 1981, he returned to Vermilion Bay to build a new home and live on the family homestead, where he grew up. He became a member of the Vermilion Bay Lions Club and the Happy Go Lucky Seniors Club and served on the Vermilion Bay Co-op Board of Directors. He was also a member and strong supporter of the New Democratic Party.
Dad loved the outdoors. In his younger years, he was an avid hunter andfisherman. In his later years the outdoor activities of choice, became gardening, bird watching, and feeding the deer herd on his property.
Dad fell ill, just before the Easter weekend of 2009, and when it became
clear that he was not going to get better, he faced his end with dignity and courage. He succumbed to his illness, three days after making it to his 88th birthday.
He was predeceased by his parents, Emil and Anna Hellsten, by his brother Martin in 1945, by his wife Anne in 1979, son John in infancy, twin sisters in infancy and nephew David Oja.
He is survived by his son Martin of Vermilion Bay, daughter Catherine and partner Randall McQuaker of Winnipeg, daughter Valerie and husband Kevin Byrne of Hanna, Alberta, sister-in-law Bertha Oja of Thunder Bay, granddaughter Elizabeth Hellsten, and numerous relatives in Finland. He also leaves behind his special friends Mickey, Lucky, Jamie and Julius.
Our family, wishes to express its gratitude to the staff at the Dryden Regional Health Centre, for the outstanding care that they provided, to Dr. Cortens, Dr. Mazurski, and Dr. Gagnon and the staff at the Machin Medical Clinic. We also want to thank the Machin First Respond Team and a special thanks to all the well wishers and those, who assisted on the day we brought him to the hospital.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
If they wish to do so, in lieu of flowers, friends of the family may make a donation to the Dryden CT Scan, the Machin Fire Team or a charity of their choice through the Dryden Community Funeral Home.

Beverly May Godin (nee Johnson) – February 26, 1944 - May 8, 2009

Beverly Godin of Medicine Hat, Alberta, passed away in hospital on Friday, May 8th, 2009 at the age of 65 years with family at her side.
Beverly leaves to cherish her memory three daughters and four grandchildren, Pamela Godin of Tofield, Alberta and her three children, Crystal, Rachael and Michael; Lisa (Rick) Vossler of Brooks, Alberta, and their daughter, Jessica of Red Deer, Alberta; and Teresa “Terri” (Garth) Neitz of Medicine Hat. Beverly also leaves behind two brothers, William (Peggy) Johnson of Fort Frances and their three children and five grandchildren; and Robert (Peggy) Johnson of Emo, Ontario and their two children; as well as her late sister’s family, Bill Paterson and their two children and five grandchildren.
Beverly was predeceased by her father, William Johnson Sr.; her mother, Beatrice Johnson (nee Blakemore), both of Emo; and her sister, Carolyn Paterson of Dryden, Ontario.
Beverly was born on February 26th, 1944 in Emo, Ontario, where she was raised and married Terry Godin of Rainy River, Ontario. Following the birth of their first two daughters, they moved to Calgary, Alberta where their third daughter was born in 1970. Six years later they parted ways and Beverly continued to raise her daughters the best she could. In October 2006, Beverly moved to Medicine Hat to be closer to her most beloved daughter, Teresa “Terri” who visited every week offering her love, support and patient kindness up to and including the day of her death. Beverly had many personal struggles in her life. Her last three years were filled with medical and emotional ups and downs, but she faced them with courage and strength. She had a love for animals, music, fun times and good food with family and friends. She also had a sharp sense of humour and always had a witty comment close at hand.
The family would like to extend special thanks to those she called “Friend” as they were a choice few, but she held them dear and spoke of them often; and to the residents and staff at The Valleyview who became a large part of her final years and her extended family. The family also wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Dang and the staff of ICU at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital who offered their kind support and care to our mother on her last day with us.

Peter Kanutski – December 18, 1922 – May 11, 2009

webobitkanutski-peter-framed

Peter Kanutski – December 18, 1922 - May 11, 2009

On Monday, May 11th, with his granddaughter holding his right hand and his daughter holding his left, our Father, Peter Kanutski, slipped from our grasp to continue his life’s journey.  He was reunited with his wife, Mable, his youngest daughter, Holly and his brothers and sisters, John, Pauline, Mary, Tony, Casmir, Helen and Ed, and others.
Dad was born in Ladywood, Manitoba December 18, 1922. As a young man he accompanied his older sister Mary and her husband Steve Kozier to Dryden to find employment. He worked in the bush cutting wood until his enlistment with the army in the 49th Division of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment in 1943.
Dad married our Mother on December 27, 1943 before he was sent overseas. He was stationed in York until his deployment to the front lines in Italy, where he was wounded on December 28, 1944. He returned to Dryden on a troop train January 10, 1946 and his daughter Doreen was born the following October 29. His son Ron was born 11 months later. The birth of his last child, Holly followed in 1956.
At this time in 1946, Dad was employed at the local mill for forty-five cents an hour. In 1950, Dad built the family home on Colonization Avenue where he remained until his move to Princess Court Nursing Home on June 12, 2007, due to ill health.
Anyone who knew our Father was aware of his passion for the outdoors. Many hours were spent fishing and hunting, and he never forgot a hunt or a hunting partner.  He had great respect for the moose and patiently waited for the season to begin. He also enjoyed picking, and eating copious amounts of blueberries. We shared many treks in the bush and bush lunches with Dad and these jaunts were usually accompanied by song (Country) and hunting stories as we journeyed to our destination. Dad always had a big garden and shared his produce with family and friends.
In earlier years, Dad would work on his days off and after shifts on the Tom Schneider farm; a labour of love for our Father, and an education for us kids. We were allowed to “work” with the threshing gangs, the haying crews, “scuffle” potatoes, dig potatoes, and eat. Hertha Schneider had to have been the best cook in the area and it was considered a privilege to help so that we could enjoy the workers’ meals. We helped Dad to cut and skid wood with the help of Schneider’s horses. It was quality time spent with our Father; a fact not appreciated until later days.
In 1955, Dad achieved his papers to operate a dragline and was also a tower crane operator. He worked at the local mill for over forty-two years where he experienced many changes and met many people.
Our Father, Pete, is survived by his daughter Doreen (Ken and granddaughter Kendra Saville), his son Ron (Hilda), grandson Ron (Sharon and great-grandchildren Julia, Sara, Bonawbae, and John) and Holly’s daughter, Brianne (Kevin) Reimer. Dad is also survived by his younger brothers Mike Kanatski (Doreen) and Stanley (known to us all as Trigger) and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance was held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 14, 2009 at St. Luke’s Anglican Church with Archdeacon Patricia Cleghorn officiating. Interment of ashes followed at the Dryden Cemetery.
Should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Dryden Food Bank or to Northwest Pet Rescue Services through Stevens Funeral Homes “Moffat Chapel” P.O. Box 412, Dryden, ON P8N 2Z1. Condolences may be emailed to sympathycard@shaw.ca subject: Kanutski

ROBINSON – Phil and Gwen

In loving memory of our dear mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, who passed away May 5/87 and March 5/94.
You were always there when we needed you,
No task too great or small.
