In loving memory of Kathy Davis, who passed away on May 12, 2012 after an admirable eight year battle with cancer.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Tom, daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Bill Atwood, and her very special grandchildren Liam and Paige Atwood.

Kathy was known for her beautiful flower gardens, and her love and knowledge of birds. She enjoyed both at her home on the lake. She was also a talented watercolour artist, though her own greatest critic.

Kathy had many, many friends. She enjoyed lunching at “her office” (the Riverview Lodge) and spending time with her “Sunshine Girls”. There were many fishing trips and get-togethers with this very special group.

Most of Kathy’s time and energy was devoted to her family and in particular her grandchildren. They were the lights of her life and she of theirs!

A memorial funeral service to celebrate Kathy’s life was held on Thursday, May 17th, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in Our Saviour Lutheran Church with Pastor James Wood, a friend for many years, officiating.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Dryden Oncology Unit through Stevens Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 412, Dryden, ON P8N 2Z1. Condolences may be posted at stevensfuneralhomes.ca

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Leonard Walter Favelle, age 73, at Princess Court in Dryden, ON, on May 2, 2012.

Leonard was born December 6, 1938 at Dryden Hospital to Florence and Alphonse Favelle.

Len married Rose Weiske on January 9, 1960 in Vermilion Bay, where they settled and raised their family. Len and Rose celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary this past January.

Len attended public school in Vermilion Bay and high school in Dryden. He spent much of his time watching and playing sports. This in turn led to coaching Evan and his friends hockey including the “infamous” Generals. Len especially enjoyed teaching his children to hunt and survive in the wild. Most importantly he taught his family the skilful art of fishing.

Len was employed in various sectors including forest fire fighting, timber scaling and driving truck for the wood haul, but his passion was always fishing and guiding on Eagle Lake.

Len proudly supported and volunteered with The Machin Fire Department for many years.

Len is survived by his wife Rose, his daughter Kim (Forrester), daughter-in-law Terry, grandchildren Jason (Tanya), Jaime, McGill and Adam, two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Jorden, sister Mildred, in-laws, numerous cousins, and friends who will dearly miss Len’s company.

Len was predeceased by his parents, his brother Robert and recently by his son Evan.

A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Leonard Favelle was held on May 7, 2012 at 1:00 pm at the United Church in Vermilion Bay with Pastor Wayne Toews and Joy Frenette officiating.

Donations may be made to the Machin Volunteer Fire Department or Machin Clinic through Stevens Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 412, Dryden, ON P8N 2Z1. Condolences may be posted at stevensfuneralhomes.ca

“See you at my favourite fishing spot”

Frances Ethel Booi – September 20, 1916 – May 7, 2012

In loving memory of Frances Ethel Booi (Lamb), age 95 years 7 months, who passed away peacefully early Monday morning May 7, 2012 in the Dryden Regional Health Care Centre.

Frances is survived by her daughter, Norma Ewen (Elden) and son, Dan Booi (Elena); grandchildren, Criss (Angela), Erin (Eric), Morgan (Melanie), MacLean (Deanna), Lance (Heather), Tricia (Tyler) and Logan; great grandchildren, Grace, Olivia, William, Mikka, Aleksi and Jacob.

Frances was predeceased by her great granddaughter Kaydence Frances; her husband, Criss; her sister, Evelyn and her brothers Lawrence and Albert Lamb and her parents, Albert and Ethel.

FRANCES ETHEL BOOI (LAMB)’s story

Frances was born September 20, 1916 in Windthorst Saskatchewan. In May 1924, the Lambs moved to Richan via train. They loaded a car of settler’s effects and arrived at midnight. Molly and Dave Paradis provided them with a place to live until they built a log house on the homestead two miles west of Richan.

Eventually, Frances and her siblings walked the railroad to school because it was the only open thoroughfare. The farm was four miles from Amesdale and the roads were not plowed in the winter. Many times the family walked to Amesdale or Richan to attend, parties, church services and dances.

With Dryden being almost inaccessible to them at that time, Sioux Lookout became their town for dental, medical and school purposes, also for recreation.

A large forest fire or two before their arrival at Richan left barren strips of rocky hillside for miles. This became the best blueberry picking country Frances had ever seen. They were like grapes on the branches. Albert Sr. and two or three of the family would camp for several days at a time, pick blueberries and stack the baskets beside the railroad until they had a minimum of 25 baskets. At times, they would have 50 or more for shipping and the locals would stop and pick up their berries destined to markets such as Eaton’s in Winnipeg.

Frances and her siblings helped homestead by picking up the roots and stacking them in piles to dry and burn. They had to clear 15 acres to acquire the patent to the homestead and pre-emption. They were also assigned the task of herding the cows and horse to have them pasture along the right-of-way of the railroad without going on the track.

Frances graduated from Success Business College in Winnipeg and worked for Archie and Helena McDonald in Quibell until her marriage to Criss William Booi in May 1942. They honeymooned at the West Coast until July when the ice went off Great Bear Lake, allowing Criss to return to work, but the manager did not think Frances should go in until a house was assured. Frances returned to McDonalds in Quibell until the beginning of September when she joined Criss at Great Bear Lake.

Life at Port Radium, NWT, was quite different with its long, dark and cold winters and short, bright, long hours of daylight but not too warm summers. The half dozen women, young marrieds, formed a branch of the Red Cross and knit socks and mitts for the War. Frances worked half days in the office since during the war one could not be idle. Criss became ill and in July 1944 they flew out to Edmonton and then home to Richan.

Criss partnered with his brother Walter Booi in North Star Camp on Clay Lake. After a year Criss and Frances sold out to Walter and Myrtle and moved to Richan where they built and operated a country general store, (Booi’s Store) gasoline pumps and later the post office for 20 years. Frances said that if anyone thinks the country is dull, she begs to differ! A baby was born on their store floor one peaceful Sunday evening when Criss’s van wouldn’t start to transport the lady to the Dryden hospital. And Frances was pregnant with Norma at the time.

Their daughter, Norma Aileen was the first baby born in 1950 in the old Dryden Hospital.

Their son, Daniel Albert was born at the old Dryden Hospital on April 6, 1954.

Frances sold the store and moved into Dryden in September 1966. Criss had been in the hospital continuously since March of that year and passed away January 3, 1967. Albert and Ethel, were finding it more difficult to carry in water and wood during the winter, so for the next 7 years, Lawrence and Abbie moved them into Dryden to stay with Frances from about the end of October to the end of April.

Frances took up employment with the New Dryden Jobbing until it was sold to Scott National 7 ½ years later. During her year of unemployment she took a night course in speed typing and to complete her 6 years until retirement age she was employed as a waitress for Rosemary and Peter at Kupper’s Bakery and Coffee shop until her retirement at age 65. The Cream slice was one of Frances’ favourites.

Frances sold her house in Dryden and moved to an apartment in 10 Victoria in 1983. She then enjoyed herself by travelling in Canada, US and beyond– she went to the east coast visiting all the eastern provinces, to Nashville to Opryland, and California. She went to Hawaii twice. One of her trips included a month long trek to Fiji, New Zealand and Australia – Frances loved travelling – she went to BC with Elden and I and Dan, and to Florida and BC with Dan, Elena and family.

Frances spent Christmas in Balmertown with Norma’s family for many years. Dan would drive her to Vermilion Bay and she would catch the bus to visit us – ‘those were very special Christmases’. The grandchildren missed her when she decided to start staying home in Dryden and spending Christmas with Uncle Lawrence and Uncle Abbie and Dan and Elena and family.

Frances was very proud of her grandchildren! Criss, Erin, Morgan and MacLean, Ewen and Lance, Tricia and Logan Booi. She has a large photo of each hanging on the wall in her dining room and later her great grandchildren.

She was a member of the Tenants Association of 10 Victoria; the Independent Order of Foresters; the United Senior Citizens of Ontario, Dryden Go-Getters and was a life member of the Women’s Institute Richan Branch – now disbanded.

Frances loved her vegetables and gardening. Her presence at Lamb’s Country Haven will be sorely missed this summer.

If friends desire, donations may be made to Princess Court DECO or St. Luke’s Anglican Church through Stevens Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 412, Dryden, ON P8N 2Z1. Condolences may be posted at stevensfuneralhomes.ca

Story by Lindsey Enns

In a news release issued this morning, the Dryden detachment wants you to know that they will be stepping up enforcement to ensure that everyone has a safe upcoming May Long Weekend.

Officers will be strictly enforcing the Liquor License Act at local bars and restaurants, the Highway Traffic Act to ensure that everyone is driving to the conditions and keeping within the spend limit as well as the Off Road Vehicles Act to keep off our area highways and waterways.

The OPP will also be patrolling any and all unorganized campsites in the area, especially those that have been a cause for concern in the past.

The last couple of May Long Weekends have ended in complaints regarding off road vehicles, cottage break and enters and personal injuries due to the consumption of alcohol. The OPP is hoping that this May Long will end differently.

The OPP would like to remind campers and outdoor enthusiasts to have a safe and happy long weekend. If you plan on drinking, please drink responsibly.

Carolyn Lou Stratton

Carol was born in Toronto on October 18, 1947, and subsequently moved to Dryden with her parents Louise and Carl Whitehead.

Carol and Roy Van Haesendonck were married in 1965 in Dryden. Roy Jr. was born in 1966 and Sean was born in 1969 while the family lived in Dryden. Ian was born in Atikokan in 1972, and shortly thereafter the

family moved to Saskatchewan.

In 1974, Carol started with PCS Allan as a Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprentice doing work placements and schooling at Kelsey Institute of Technologies. She was the first licensed female heavy duty mechanic in Saskatchewan. Carol worked in this career until 1980 when her health wouldn’t allow her to continue on with her trade.

Carol was very involved with the boys’ hockey, travelling throughout the small towns of Saskatchewan to attend games and tournaments, and began coaching hockey in the mid-eighties. Her passion of following the boys’ sports continued all through her life, as she was always a very vocal supporter of their hockey and baseball teams.

Carol returned to Dryden in 1989, and Bruce and Carol were married in July of that year. In 1990, Bruce and Carol were elated to add a daughter to their family.

Carol loved spending time outdoors, including driving on the back roads and weekend fishing trips. She also loved to spend time with her many friends, and welcome everyone, especially her children’s friends, with open arms. Carol had a huge heart and always treated others with respect and kindness.

Carol was most proud of her seven grandchildren. Carol loved spending time with them and watched as many of their activities and sporting events as possible. She never missed a special event or birthday.

Also important to Carol were Bruce’s sister Judy Stratton, and his brother and sister-in-law Tom and Fern Stratton. As well, Carol had a special place in her heart for the Becker, Bedford, Lund and Ternowski families.

Carolyn is survived by her husband Bruce; son Roy (Michelle) Van Haesendonck Jr. and their three children Steffen, Analyssa and Timothy; son Sean (Melanie) Van Haesendonck and their two children Joshua and Kaitlyn; son Ian (Seija) Van Haesendonck and their two children Aila and Flynn; and daughter Carolyn Stratton.

Carol was predeceased by her parents Carl and Louise Whitehead.

A Memorial Funeral Service to celebrate the life of Carolyn Stratton was held Thursday, May 3rd at 11:00 a.m. in the Moffat Chapel of the Stevens Funeral Home. Interment of ashes followed in the Dryden Cemetery.

If friends desire, donations may be made to the Second Chance Pet Network or a charity of your choice through Stevens Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 412, Dryden, ON P8N 2Z1. Condolences may be posted at stevensfuneralhomes.ca
