Nordic Skiing Eagles brave nasty conditions in NorWOSSA race event at Dryden Ski Club

It was about as bad as it gets before race officials might throw in the towel — a bone-chilling -19 degrees Celcius combined with a full-on blizzard descending on the region. Yet the Dryden Eagles still managed to draw 44 skiers from Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Atikokan and Red Lake to their NorWOSSA event, Jan. 30, salvaged by impeccable grooming courtesy of Craig Bullock.

Seniors girls Amy Wickstrom, Payton Zilkalns  and Sarah Urquhart finished 1-2-3 respectively in their 4.2 kilometre course.Local Nick Peters  grabbed the bronze medal in the Senior Boys’ 6km distance behind some strong Red lake competitors.Junior girls Jamee Desserre finished second with Cynthia Terry placing fourth in their 2.5 kilometre race. Junior boys racer Liam Jones placed fourth in his 4.2 km ski.  Skiers are off to NWOSSA this week in Kenora.                    Photos by Chris Marchand
