Dryden High School nordic skiers performed well at the recent NWOSSA championship in Marathon, Feb. 8.
Travelling light, DHS fielded a team of just fours racers, due to illnesses and other committments.
Senior Adrian Lizzi was neck and neck with the head of the pack in the 6.8 kilometre senior race. A caught edge caused Lizzi to crash putting him 18 seconds behind the third place finisher from Kenora. Northwestern skiers, primarily from Kenora and Atikokan dominated the Junior Girls, Senior Girls and Senior Boys races.
First year Eagles skier Luke Smith took advantage of the excellent gliding conditions to ski the 5.8 kilometre junior course in a time of 19:19.
Rookie teammate Ilya Perkins finished in 19:49, while Brayden Davis had his best race since joining the club, finishing in 20:10.
DHS Nordic Team is now preparing for the OFSAA Championship, to be held in Huntsville, Feb. 22-24.
