With the retirement of the three volunteers on the Mayor’s Committee for Children and Youth (MCCY), including Barb Buffet, Lynn Carlson and Susan Schultz, the Dryden Neighbourhood Legacy Project (NLP) partnered with the city of Dryden to take over the valuable service for the community.
The MCCY provided children and youth in the area with financial assistance in participating in youth activities, including such things as music lessons, hockey and skating registrations, or recreation memberships.
Following a call for help last summer to any organization willing to take over this charitable aspect, the NLP came to aid the volunteers.
“We are all very excited to be able to continue this vital work in Dryden and Area with our partner the City of Dryden and under the guidance of the outgoing members of the Mayor’s Committee.  We will make every effort to ensure that children and youth are not left standing outside of an activity because of their family’s financial situation,” said NLP chair, Shayne MacKinnon.
MacKinnon stated that the Neighbourhood Legacy Project Committee meets on a monthly basis and will make the assistance program a part of their agenda.  The MCCY will now have a public access point at the city’s 45 King Street location, and will have staff member, Andi Kidd, Community Projects and Program Developer, available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Agencies and organizations serving children and families in the community will continue to play the important role of processing the applications for their clients and sending the documentation to the new office.
The City of Dryden will provide central point coordination as well as financial and clerical in kind support.  The Mayor’s Committee work is funded through grants available in the area including the Moffat Family Fund and the Kenora District Services Board, the Canadian Tire Corporation as well as many others. Private and Corporate donations are gratefully accepted through Dryden Neighbourhood Legacy Project and receipts will be provided.
