May is survived by her husband Aurel; son Real; two God-daughters Ethel May Maenpaa and family of Sask.; Caroline Lejeune and family of Newport Centre Gaspe, Quebec; sisters Edna Gurney, Ruth Cutbush, both of Thunder Bay, Marlene Scully of Surrey, BC and brother John (Barbara) Appel of Pass Lake, ON; sisters-in-law Ver Appel of Sask., Florence Appel of Thunder Bay, Iris of Thunder Bay; brothers-in-law Gerald O’Grady and Ed Scully, and special friend Nicole (Louie) Holmerson of MB. May is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
May was predeceased by her parents, John and Rose; son Dale; brothers, Ronald Kakko, Raymond Appel, Leonard Appel and wife Evangeline, Ernest Appel, and sisters Dorothy Lupien and husband Julien, Betty Witzell and husband Jack, Carol O’Grady, and brother-in-law Albert Gurney.
After her discharge from the C.W.A.C., May worked in bush camps as a cook, then chef. She met Aurel in the early 1950s and they were married in 1953, moving to Dryden in 1957. May worked at the Brite Spot Café for many years, then at the Dryden Hotel. In 1967 they opened May’s Café.
May joined the Canadian Legion in 1958 and was very active for many years.
May loved to travel, and they traveled across Canada many times. They spent six winters in Mesa, Arizona.
May’s final years were spent here in Dryden playing cribbage at the Legion and the Seniors’ Centre.
There was no visitation as cremation had taken place.
A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Al Campeau officiating. A Legion service followed.
A private family interment will take place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, if desired, memoriam donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion through the Dryden Community Funeral Home 249 Grand Trunk Ave. Dryden, ON P8N 2X3.
