The Dryden Eagles Boys Hockey team travelled to Winnipeg on Jan. 5-7 to compete in the John Taylor Tournament of Champions.
Defeating Sturgeon Heights, 4-2, on Jan. 5 in game one, the Eagles moved on to an overtime loss of 1-2 with Edge Gold from Alberta.
Brendan Szabo faced 52 shots in the game to earn him Player of the Game, for DHS.
Game three ended in a loss of 3-0 to John Taylor, being badly outshot again, but goaltender Adam Notte faced 35 shots and played very well to keep DHS in the game.
Moving into the playoff round, the Eagles lost 4-3 in overtime to Oak Park, who is currently the top team in the WHSHL.
Dryden was tied 1-1 after the first period as Drew Walske scored on a power play, but Oak Park scored twice on the power play in the second.
With DHS?trailing 3-1 after two periods, Tyler Kirouac lead the Eagles back into the game with a pair of goals in the third period, but the Eagles lost once again in overtime.
Goaltender, Justin Oltsher received Player of the Game honours for his solid performance between the pipes.
“Our team learned this weekend, that we can compete with the best teams in Manitoba.  To come back and force overtime against Oak Park was a great effort by everyone on the team.  It was a heartbreaking loss but the confidence gained will hopefully carry over into the second half of their season,” said coach, Jamie Oltsher.
The boys will hit the ice next on Jan. 10 vs. Ear Falls, Jan. 12 vs. Thomas Aquinas, and Jan. 15 vs. Beaver Brae.  All games are out of town.
