St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Dryden has a new minister.
Replacing the retiring Patricia Cleghorn, Dick Kennedy will spend his time ministering between St. Luke’s in Dryden and Sioux Lookout’s St. Mary’s.
“I was looking for change and a challenge,” says Kennedy whose previous posting was in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. “I guess the seven-year itch had set in — I’d been in Maple Creek for seven years, it was my first parish and I didn’t want to spend my entire ministry in one church. I have six or seven years until retirement, so I thought it would be a good time to look at another place.”
Kennedy entered the ministry later in life after spending 28 years in the jewellery business. His wife Colleen has joined him in Dryden. The couple have three adult children and eight grandchildren.
Kennedy says it is an interesting time for St. Luke’s in Dryden with a bit of a resurgence in interest in the Anglican church from new members as well as those among the 190 families on the parish list whose attendance may have lapsed over the years.
“It might be because there’s a new kid on the block,” he said.
Kennedy says music plays a large role in his approach to services.
“My concept of ministry is to make people comfortable in worship and in their relationship with God,” said Kennedy. “I work towards a lot more unity in the church — not just within the Anglican church, but between all the churches in the community. We want to see both St. Luke’s and St. Mary’s grow.”
