Dryden Mayor Craig Nuttall says a public meeting in the new year will bring residents up to speed on the city’s efforts to address the urban deer population — a popular complaint of residents that has proven difficult to solve.
Nuttall says city administration will be on hand to inform residents of current bylaws as they pertain to wildlife and firearms within city limits. Representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources will be invited to offer a biologist and wildlife management perspective.
The move comes shortly after city councils in Thunder Bay and Kenora have examined amending firearms bylaws to allow bowhunting in some semi-rural areas within city limits under specific conditions.
Nuttall says similar provisions already exist in Dryden, which some residents may not be aware of.
“You can shoot a deer in Barclay, it’s not among our bylaws that you can’t,” said Nuttall. “So, we want people to know what the bylaws are. I understand there’s a problem. I have seven deer in my yard eating my cedar every year.”
Nuttall says a date for the public meeting, likely to be held at The Centre, will be announced closer to the new year.
