At one time they were Dryden’s go-to band — the stars of Saturday night in The Moose or the Legion clubrooms.
Many years since they’ve dispersed into a number of different local musical entities, members of Dryden’s 10 Bucks On The Road, will once again reunite November 12 at The Centre in a fundraiser evening for The Second Chance Pet Network’s ongoing shelter construction fund. Local band Opened Faith will also perform.
Calling themselves Glenn Scheibler and The 10 Bucks Band, the lineup will be missing original member Steve Warren, but will feature local piano man Paul Hampton.
The country-western group first formed in 1980 with frontman Glenn Scheibler, Byron O’Donnell, Steve Warren and Rick Smith.
When O’Donnell left Dryden for Winnipeg in the early 1980s, he was replaced on bass guitar by John (JB) Hewitson. Tom Stratton, Scheibler’s brother-in-law, joined the group and the lineup stabilized for many years, recording an album and playing most weekends.
In 1985, Smith left the group to pursue a rock band project and Tom Stemkoski took over on the skins.
We played a lot,” said Smith. “We played every weekend, The Moose or The Legion and the crowds would just follow us. We always had a full house.”
Scheibler says the group disbanded in 1987, when ‘it wasn’t fun anymore’.
In the past 15 years, however, Scheibler and company have found themselves having fun on stage together a number of times. From a standing-room-only reunion show at the Legion Hall in the 2002 to a standing ovation at last April’s Kickin’ Country concert at The Centre, Smith says the community has demonstrated that they haven’t forgot about 10 Bucks On The Road.
“Glenn is so good at it,” says Smith. “I don’t know what it is about him, but he gets on stage and he just shines. It’s where he was meant to be.”
Scheibler says rehearsals have been going well.
“We’ve kept a list of some of the songs we used to do,” said Scheibler. “It’s surprising how, with very little effort, everything sort of comes back to you. Some songs you have to work on more than others. But you know what they say about practice?”
