For the first time ever, Dryden High School will have athletes competing at the provincial level in cross-country running when nine members of the Eagles running squad attend the OFSAA Cross-Country Running Championships in Ottawa, Nov. 5.
Last week’s NWOSSA championships at Thunder Bay’s Kamview Nordic Centre saw 25 DHS athletes take on the region with excellent results. The Midget (Grade 9) girls claimed a gold medal in the team event thanks to finishes from Andie Wood (4), Elizabeth Carter (5), Emily Day (15) and Emmy Arsenault (13).
The Midget Boys claimed silver as a team on finishes from Tyler Leonzio (2), Eldon Vandenbrand (4), Jake Wickstrom (6), Matt Wood (18) and Michael Dufresne (27).
Kirk Markowski placed second in the junior boys (Grade 10) race.
The Eagles Senior girls managed a bronze medal in a very competitive category.
The top finishing midget girls and boys team members and Markowski have been chosen to compete in Ottawa.
“In our first year of eligibility we managed to qualify about 40 per cent of the team for OFSAA,” said coach Mike Wood. “So, we’re pretty happy with that. We have some exceptional young runners that qualified both as individuals and as team.
Wood says the competition in Ottawa will be fierce as runners are not classed by school size, as in most high school sports.
“We’re competing against the top 38 teams in the province — schools of all sizes. Plus, they don’t divide cross-country and track and field. Everybody’s out there. It’s a pretty incredible competition, one of the largest competitions in North America.”
Wood says the DHS delegation will try to increase their speed in training as they prepare for the Ottawa trip.
“They’ve been working on it since early summer,” said Wood. “There’s only so much you can do in the last two weeks. We’ll be fine-tuning and working on our speed.”
