The Dryden Eagles got into the win column against Winnipeg’s St. John’s Tigers after a solid game in which both lines increased the intensity of their physical play, Sept. 23.
The win was the Eagle’s first of the season for a score of 21-11.
The game began with both sides feeling each other out and trading possessions. St. John’s behind a bruising fullback and power run game moved close enough in the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead on a punt aimed for the corner for a rouge (single-point kick into the end-zone).
Dryden rebounded in the second with 14 points, much of it coming on the ground. Jesse Gerula, Jeremy Euler and Adam Saunders took advantage of tenacious run blocking to chew up yardage in chunks.
Gerula scored first on a 12 yard sweep to the right side. Quarterback Ryan Martel scored the Eagles second major on a one-yard plunge after completing a 23 yard pass to Jhustin Czajkowski to bring it close. The Tigers responded with a field goal just before half to send it to break at 14-4 for Dryden.
The Eagles took their second possession of the 3rd quarter and extended their lead when Gerula went outside for two yards after a sustained drive filled with plenty of strong blocking. The St. John’s squad was able to pass their way to a late TD to complete the scoring.
Statistical leaders for the Eagles included Jesse Gerula (eight carries for 86 yards), Jeremy Euler (10 – 61 yards), Ryan Martel (2-2 passing 27 yards), Shane Kirton (1-1 passing 8 yards).
On the defensive line Caine Benham had 14 tackles, and Patrick Wall had 8 tackles and a fumble recovery.
The Eagles next meet the Sisler Spartans, Thursday, Sept. 29 in Winnipeg.
