On August 29, 2011 at approximately 4:00 p.m., Sioux Lookout Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a small aircraft crash south of the chutes on Abram Lake.

Police received a report that a small aircraft had crashed in the water south of the chutes near Reese Island, and the plane had been occupied by a single person and a dog. The OPP, MNR, Sioux Lookout Fire Services and Ambulance attended the scene.

The pilot was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. A post mortem examination was scheduled for Tuesday, August 30 in Kenora. The pilot was identified as a Minnesota man from Sunfish Lake.

This incident is currently under investigation by the OPP and Transport Canada.
