Howard Hampton, current NDP Member of Provincial Parliament, has announced he will not be running in the October elections.
“I’ve been at this for 35 years and I am very much at peace with the notion that it is time for me to go, time to do some other things,” said Hampton. “I had this conversation with Peter Kormos (NDP MPP for Welland). It’s easier for people like me and him, people who have been at this for over 20 or 30 years to say it’s okay to go now, and that’s very much the decision I’ve made. It’s okay to go now.”
Sarah Campbell, the Oxdrift representative for the Kenora District Services Board (KDSB) and DoKURA (the District of Kenora Unincorporated Ratepayers Association), has announced her intention to seek the NDP nomination for the Kenora-Rainy River riding.
“Working with Howard has given me a unique perspective of how this provincial government is failing to meet the needs of Northern Ontario,” says Campbell. “Whether it’s the backroom deal to impose the HST or McGuinty’s failed hydro strategy that is driving bills through the roof, I’ve listened to what people are saying and I’m planning to take that to Queen’s Park and deliver results for hardworking families in our region.”
Campbell was elected to the Oxdrift seat for KDSB and DoKURA in October of 2010. She was elected president of the Kenora-Rainy River NDP in 2007 and has been re-elected as president in each consecutive election. In addition, she chaired the Election Planning Committees both federally and provincially. Campbell served on the Thunder Bay-Superior North NDP executive while studying at Lakehead University, where she co-founded the Lakehead University NDP campus club.
For the last eight years Campbell has worked in Howard Hampton’s Dryden office, coordinating community outreach and awareness campaigns for the MPP.
“I want to thank the people who supported me and voted for me over those many years. It’s a real privilege to be able to do this work. I can honestly say that 99 per cent of the time I enjoyed and looked forward every day to doing the work,” said Hampton. “I thank those people who put their trust in me and I hope they’ll put their trust in New Democrats going forward.”
