Grade 7 teacher from Riverview School, Conor Doherty, is helping kids get fit and active this summer. Offering a week-long sports camp to students just finishing Grade 3 to kids just finishing Grade 6, Doherty plans on offering a variety of different sports opportunities including floor hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, bowling, tennis with Brian Eschbach and Stephen Cortens, football with Neil McLeod, golf and track and field with Mike Wood.
The camp will run from June 27 to July 1 at the High School, and then a repeat will be offered from July 4 to July 8. There will be two sports run daily, with some field trips to places like Anderson’s Golf Course and Timber Lane’s Bowling Centre.
“We want to get kids out using the facilities in the community. I’m just trying to get kids out, playing sports, being active, give them a reason to get off the couch in the summertime and give them something fun to do,” said Doherty.
The fee will be $100 per week per student, and Doherty says he is aiming for 60 students to participate. Most equipment will be supplied, but Doherty says he may need to borrow some baseball gloves and junior golf clubs. To volunteer some equipment or to sign up, interested families can contact Doherty at conor.doherty@kpdsb.on.ca
