Obituaries — 30 June 2011
In loving memory of Kathleen (Kay) Coles, nee Wilson, age 95 years, who passed away peacefully at her residence in Princess Court on Wednesday, June 1st, with her family at her side.
Kay was born in Glenella, MB, December 17, 1915, and raised in Virden, MB. In 1944 she married Gordon Coles and in 1956, Kay, Gordon and their three boys moved to Dryden where she resided ever since. For over 25 years she lived at 10 Victoria and was commonly seen dining at the Riverview Lodge.
Volunteering and participating in the community was of the utmost importance to Kay. For over 30 years she was a familiar sight on the corner of Whyte Ave and King Street in downtown Dryden in front of the Royal Bank, canvassing for charitable organizations. The walls of her apartment were adorned with certificates of appreciation for over 25 years of service. She was a member of the Go Getters Club and for over 20 years collected recyclable items from seniors to bring to the town’s child resource centre to be used for craft and art projects.
Kay enjoyed quilting, letter writing, gardening and she loved music and sports. She sang in the choirs at the Anglican and United Churches and was a longtime member of Dryden’s Serenaders. She was an avid fan of curling, and cheered for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and the Brooklyn Dodgers, as baseball was her favourite sport.
Above all else, her family was her main interest. She never missed a school concert, music recital, graduation, or hockey game. Her birthday party in December every year was a family event not to be missed, and is a tradition that will continue in her memory.
Kay is survived by her sons George (Phyllis) and Bob; daughter-in-law Shirley (Garnet); four grandchildren, Brad (Cindy), Shelley, Orvie (Jamie), Ted; four great-grandchildren, Marcie, Lindsay, Tori, Will; niece (Betty); nephews, Ford (Yvette), Bruce (Carol), and sister-in-law Marian.
She is predeceased by her parents, husband Gordon, son Bill, sisters Grace and Gwen, and brothers Dick and Bob.
Funeral Services were held Monday, June 6th in the Moffat Chapel of Stevens Funeral Homes with Pastor Doug Brown officiating. Interment followed in the Dryden Cemetery.
