Josephine Francesca Zoccole (Zoccoli) Cone, a native of Wabigoon and a resident of Whitby, died after a brief illness at Lakeridge Oshawa General Hospital on Sunday, February 13, 2011.
Josephine was a retired prospector, nurse and Ojibwa translator. She loved to dance and had dreams of being a ballerina taking ballet lessons through correspondence. She loved to travel and tell stories of her adventures with her husband Fred.
She trapped to make money when she was left alone to care for their young children at the age of 32.
She guided prospectors and taught them what she learned from Fred during their prospecting years.
In her later years she filled her time with knitting and would give beautiful scarfs lovingly to her grandchildren.
On occasion enjoyed a good drink of brandy and a cigarette; she could be a bit of a rebel at times.
She was predeceased by her parents Michael and Elizabeth Zoccole (Zoccoli), her husband Fredrick Charles Cone II in 1944, her sons Fredrick Charles III (Freddy) Cone in 1952, Roderick Allen Cone (Roddy) in 1988, Garry Steven Cone in 1989, by her infant granddaughter Theresa Cone, infant grandson Paul Cone, her granddaughter Joanne Wetelainen-Morris in 2006, by her infant great-granddaughter Karen Wetelainen in 1985 and great-grandson Damon Wetelainen in 1995, her infant great-great grandson Logan Gardner in 1996, her daughter-in-law Mary Cone in 1995; by her brothers, Rocco, Joseph, Steve and Carl Zoccole and her second husband William J. Aalto.
She is survived by her daughters Edeline (Henry) Wetelainen of Wabigoon, ON and Sharon (Michel) Nolet of Whitby, ON as well as 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 13 great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
As per Josephine’s wishes, cremation has already taken place.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Wabigoon Metis Centre on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the Metis Centre on Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Interment will be in the Dinorwic Cemetery with her husband Fred and her three sons.
If friends desire, in lieu of flowers the family requests that donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of choice.
