Obituaries — 12 April 2011

Paul passed away on Sunday, April 3rd at the Lake of the Woods Hospital in Kenora.  He was born July 1, 1932 in Regina, Saskatchewan.  Paul came to Rainy River, Ontario in 1938 with his parents and siblings by railcar, and a year later the family made their way to Crozier, a small community just west of Fort Frances.His parents built and operated Hampton’s store on Highway 11 in Crozier.  Paul attended high school in Fort Frances and then teachers’ college at Western University in London, Ontario.  After graduating from teachers’ college, Paul began his teaching career in Fort Frances at Robert Moore School.  He taught in Fort Frances only one year and then moved to Atikokan to teach and met Shirley Donaldchuk whom he married in 1962.  Paul and Shirley moved to Dryden in 1963 and both began teaching at Dryden High School.  Paul spent the next 24 years at DHS where he taught local students, specializing in his passion of Geography.  Paul retired from teaching in 1987.Paul was an active person who really enjoyed participating in hockey, curling, fishing, hunting and then most recently the Senior Games.  Paul loved to travel and explain in geographic terms the landscapes through North America.  He also had a great passion for the game of bridge.  Paul was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the New Democratic Party of Canada.Surviving are Paul’s three children, Paul, John and Lesley all of Dryden; two grandchildren Dustin and Kyle of Dryden; sister Marion of Fort Frances and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his wife Shirley in 1989, mother and father Lily and Paul Hampton, brother George and infant sister Dorothy.Paul will be remembered as a dedicated family man and teacher who loved the Northwestern Ontario area and everything it offered.A Memorial Funeral Service was held to celebrate Paul’s life on Thursday, April 7, 2011 in the Royal Canadian Legion, Dryden with Chaplain Doug Wightman officiating. Interment of ashes will take place in the Dryden Cemetery at a later date.If friends desire, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society through the Stevens Funeral Homes, P.O.
