Sports & Recreation — 15 February 2011
High school nordic skiers faced a frigid day of competition as Kenora’s Evergreen Ski Hill hosted the 2011 NWOSSA Nordic Championships, Feb 10.
Race temperatures were near the -18 degree mark with a cold wind and tough gliding conditions.
The weather resulted in a shortening of the senior boys race to six kilometres. Local Kjell Schmidt placed behind Biathlon Manitoba teammates Eric Lockart of Kenora and Nicholas Dumontier of Red Lake for third place.
Candace Glowa who joined the Manitoba Biathlon team this week at the Canada Games in Halifax, after an outpouring of financial support from the community, placed 3rd in the NWOSSA Senior category behind Kenora skiers.
There were good results in the junior boys competition with Eric Schmidt taking gold and Adrian Lizzi placing third.
In a Grade 7-8 category, Pinewood’s Mike Hodgkinson placed third.
