Opening the “Lace Up For Cancer” game on Friday, February 11 was 2 1/2-year old Keira Wright.
Taking part in the ceremonial puck drop, Keira, assisted by Ice Dogs captain Jon Mitchell, was there in honour of her older sister Brenna?Wright who is currently hospitalized with kidney problems.
The game against Sioux Lookout Flyers saw custom ordered jerseys for each player, and being sponsored by local businesses and families.
The sale of the jerseys and proceeds of the game allowed the Dryden Ice Dogs to donate $1,000 to the Dryden Regional Health Centre Oncology Unit in support of their ultrasound project.
The “Lace Up For Cancer” game is an annual event that the Ice Dogs take part in, started with a player wearing pink laces in honour of his grandmother.
“The boys were very proud to wear the jerseys, they would like to continue to wear them for the rest of the season,” says Anita Hackman, Ice Dogs volunteer and pink the rink organizer.  “None of this could be done without the support of the community.”
Thomas Greene was the first to find the back of the net in period one, on a power play at 13:36.
The middle session saw the Flyers take two goals and the lead.
In the third period, the Dogs would respond with three straight goals, compliments of Alex Galbraith taking ownership of two, and the third by Bryce Maggrah.
Dwight Lee saw the fifth goal, although Galbraith would complete a hat-trick with an empty-net strike late in the game.
“It was kind of a messy game, but we played a good first period,” said goalie, Brett Timmerman.  “Second period we kinda let off the gas a little bit, and third period for sure our offence kicked in.”
Shots on goal favoured the Ice Dogs 26-20.  The win saw the Dryden Ice Dogs improve to 29-19-2.
Timmerman says he would have liked to have a couple goals back, but the main thing is getting the win and the two points.
When asked about improvement strategies going into the playoffs, Timmerman replied, “Keep focused, be ready and keep doing what I’m doing.”
The Ice Dogs have three home games this week, starting with Fort Frances on Feb. 16, Wisconson on Feb. 18 and finishing off the home season with the opening ceremonies of Winterfest, matched up against Duluth.
