The Dryden Ice Dogs played their two final home games against the visiting American teams this past weekend.  Following a 4-3 win over the Fort Frances Lakers on Wednesday, the Ice Dogs saw a loss to Wisconsin Wilderness on Fri., Feb. 18 with a score of 3-2.
With goals scored by Luke Kasteel and Henry Vadnais, it was not enough to save the game, even with goaltender Brett Timmerman making 20 saves.
Saturday, Feb. 19 saw much better results with a win over Duluth and a final score of 6-4.
Starting the game with the grand opening ceremonies of Winterfest, the pound was packed to cheer on the team.
Thomas Greene and Dwight Lee would give Dryden an early 2-0 lead in the first.  With no Ice Dogs goals in the second, the third period saw Jesse Linner responding with a shorthanded effort pulling Dryden even.
Goals by Luke Kasteel, Jon Mitchell and Alex Galbraith would finish off the win.
Shots on goal were 33-30 in Dryden’s favour with Perrier picking up the win.
The victory also lifted the Ice Dogs into a third place tie with the idle Thunder Bay North Stars at 64 points each.
Dryden’s overall record is 31-20-2 while the first-year Clydesdales dropped to 10-40-3.
“Our first two periods weren’t as strong as they should have been, but by the end of the second we realized that our talent is no better than their hard work when we’re not working hard,” said Ice Dogs goalie, Ian Perrier.
Linner says the team sat back after the two-goal lead, but should have put “the pedal to the metal”.
“We finally realized that when we were down by one going into the third,” said Linner.
The Ice Dogs will see three away games before heading to the playoffs against the Fort Frances Lakers and two games against the Sioux Lookout Flyers.
