The Superior Internation Junior Hockey (SIJHL) league announced that Jon Mitchell of the Dryden Ice Dogs has been named the league’s best defenceman for the 2010-11 season.
This is the second consecutive year that Mitchell has received the honour of this award, as the winner for the 2009-10 season.
“It’s a great honour for sure, looking at the past guys that have won it.  I really couldn’t have won it without help from Clint (Mylymok) and my teammates,’ says Mitchell.
Although this is Mitchell’s last year, he is aspiring for bigger things in his future.
“I must be doing something right for sure, and it’s been three great years here for me.  Hopefully we’ll bring the Bill Salonen home this year.”
Mitchell’s goal is Division One college hockey, preferably in Omaha, Nebraska.  Mitchell says the head coach for the Omaha team has a great resume, and he would like to train under him in the future.
The 20-year-old native of Anola, MB, has averaged a point-per-game with Dryden this season with 42 in as many outings while also anchoring the club’s defensive corps.
Mitchell came out on top over fellow SIJHL best defenceman finalists Nathan Paulsen of the Wisconsin Wilderness and Kevin Hamel of the Thunder Bay North Stars to win the award following voting done by the SIJHL’s six-member clubs.
