The City of Dryden has their planning underway for the 2011 Winterfest celebrations. Following the success of last year’s celebration, the 2011 Winterfest will be expanded to three days, from February 19 to 21, incorporating Family Day.
Planners Andi Kidd and Alyssa Pronger have incorporated a multitude of events into this year’s schedule and will see opening ceremonies at the last home game of the Dryden Ice Dogs.
The pair will be selling toques prior to the game, which will include a free game ticket and a chance to win $1,000 with your attendance at the Ice Dogs game. There will be 800 of these toques available to purchase, and the organizers would like to “pack the pound” for the final home game.
Also included in the opening day of Winterfest will be the 31st Annual Snowarama and a D.A.R.E. Dance for youth in Grades 6 to 8.
Day two will see a variety of events, starting with a pancake breakfast, family fun swim, family fun skate with Sparky and Crusher, a hole-in-one puck shoot, and a skating oval and sliding hill.
There will also be a bonfire and warm-up station, sleigh rides, snowkiting lessons and demonstrations, skijoring demonstrations and gobble gobble curling funspiel.
The “turkey curling” event is planned as an adult event, but is in need of sponsors to make it a success.
Monday’s schedule will see another pancake breakfast, 3 on 3 hockey tournament, free water fit, family fun swim, hole-in-one puck shoot, snowkiting lessons and demonstrations and the favourite skating oval, sliding hill, and bonfire.
New to day three will be a family ice fishing derby, dog sled rides, and progressive tennis.
A loved event taking place on Monday will be the judging for the “Pimp your ice shack” competition. Pre-registration is necessary for this event, as well as Snowarama, gobble gobble curling, 3-on-3 hockey tournament and the family ice fishing derby.
More information, rules, schedules and pre-registration can be found at www.experiencedryden.ca or by calling Andi or Alyssa at the Rec Department at 223-1426.
