Sports & Recreation — 18 January 2011
Dryden Volleyball Club entered three teams in the 2011 Pizza Hut tournament on Jan. 14 and 15 at Dryden High School, Whiskey Jacks burgundy (14 and under), Whiskey Jacks grey (14 and under), and Whiskey Jacks 13s (13 and under).
The grey squad and 13s played with all the junior level teams in the round robin, but then were moved into a separate 14 and under playoff along with the Fort Frances Vipers. Grey and 13’s both went 0-4 in the round robin.
In their playoff rounds, grey lost versus the Vipers 9-25, 20-25 and won versus 13s 18-25, 25-13.
13’s lost versus the Vipers 13-25, 16-25 and lost the split against Grey 25-18, 13-25 but earned their first won set.
The burgundy squad played as a regular entry in the tournament. In round robin play, the girls split the sets in their matches with Beaver Brae, Fort black, and Hammerskjold, and won their match against the Vipers to place 2nd of five in their pool.
In the second place Power Pool play, the squad lost against Fort gold 15-25, 13-25 and split with Eagles gold 23-25, 26-24.
Ranked sixth entering playoffs, the girls won versus La Verendyre in the first round 25-13, 25-13 followed by a loss to Thomas Aquinas in the quarter-finals 14-25, 16-25.
Playing at a tournament that is one age level up is a great experience for the Whiskey Jacks players. It’s a great chance to see the next level of play.
