Ongoing discussions have been taking place in the community for the city to enquire about costing from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
At the Jan. 10 Committee of the Whole meeting, councillor Brian Collins put forth a motion to mayor and council stating with a resolution stating, “Therefore be it resolved that the Council of the City of Dryden endorses the Dryden Police Service as the law enforcement agency of choice to provide policing in the City of Dryden.”
As it was brought forward as a motion, no discussions took place, and councillors will vote on the motion at the Jan. 17 Open Council meeting.
Collins says the retiring police chief is one of the many reasons he brought the motion forward at this time.
“There was lots of talk during the election about costing and so on and so forth, and I want to move forward with the replacement of the Chief. The only way to do it is either we’re voting for this, or we’re not voting for it. Rather than fool around, the motion will come next week and it will be voted on,” said Collins.
Collins feels that with this motion, if passed, the OPP costing issues would be completely off the table for the term of this council, and would allow the Police Services Board to begin the recruitment process to replace Chief Shayne
MacKinnon.
“Otherwise, who would apply if that’s still on the table. Who would leave a job, no matter if it’s internal or external candidates, who would leave a job to come to a place where the job may not be there,” confirms Collins.
Collins has supported the municipal police force from the beginning, and doesn’t expect a lot of complaints from the community on this matter.
