It was a hot and cold week for the Dryden Ice Dogs as the club blindsided the league-leading Fort Frances Lakers, then were shut-out the following night by the Thunder Bay North Stars.
Somewhat recent acquisition Dwight Lee is rapidly growing into the role of ‘go-to guy’ on the Ice Dogs roster with a huge night on the scoresheet against Fort Frances, Jan. 18. The former Sioux Lookout Flyer marked three goals and three assists in what became an unexpected 8-2 drubbing of the league’s top team, putting an end to a six-game win streak.
In 14 games with the Ice Dogs Lee has notched seven goals and 10 assists.
Powerplay goals were a distinct factor in the matchup with the Lakers with Dryden scoring on three of seven man-advantages. One of Lee’s goals emerged from a turnover in the neutral zone that quickly became a shorthanded goal in the second period.
Other goals were scored Jon Mitchell, Jesse Linner, Ryan Lobreau, Henry Vadnais and Tom Kuhn.
Ice Dogs goalie Ian Perrier faced 26 shots, stopping all but two from Lakers’ sniper and league-leading scorer Tyler Stevenson.
The following night belonged to Thunder Bay North Stars goalie Guillaume Piché who stopped everything the Ice Dogs could throw at him while his teammates amassed a 3-0 lead in the first period.
The North Stars would add a fourth goal early in the fourth period. Neither team managed to generate any powerplay scoring.
The Dryden Ice Dogs have the week off from league play as high school exam week settles over the region. They return to action, Jan. 27 in Sioux Lookout — the beginning of six game road stint against the Sioux Lookout Flyers, The Wisconsin Wilderness, The Duluth Clydesdales and Fort Frances Lakers.
They won’t return to home ice until Feb. 9 when they face the Fort Frances Lakers at Dryden Memorial Arena.
