Kirouac Contracting, which has been in business since 1970, was forced to find other opportunities for the company following illness of owner, Roland Kirouac.
As of November 2010, Raleigh Falls Timber/Ricci’s Trucking bought out the majority of Kirouac Contracting, resulting in continued employment of approximately 45 staff between the two companies.
Some of the logging contractor employees have been with the company since its inception, and Kirouac says they are like family.
“My biggest concern was making sure that all my drivers had jobs,” says Kirouac. “That was the critical thing. It was kind of like a big family there and it was a very difficult decision on my part and on the staff’s part.”
“In today’s world, that’s a lot of jobs to be lost in this economy,” commented Raleigh Falls/Ricci’s Trucking owner, Louie Ricci.
Ricci acquired the truck and trailer units needed to maintain service on current logging operations, and keep his own chipper operations running. The Kirouac facility, located on Hwy. 17 east in the Western Star building, has been leased to Ricci as well, maintaining the staff and service needed to run the expanded operations.
“It’s been a pretty seamless transition, and everybody is cooperating well,” says Bill Genik, operations manager for Ricci.
Ricci intends to expand even more, with his partnership with Bryan Tardiff and their proposed biomass plant. The expansion cannot take place until the province sends out notices of the Ontario Wood Supply Competition, and if successful, could employ up to another 100 people.
Ricci is now one of the biggest employers in the community, with over 220 employees following the Kirouac purchase.
