Monday, Dec. 6 marked the first official meeting of the new mayor and council in the City of Dryden. With all new council in attendance, a special inaugural celebration was held at the Centre, Marg Aitken opening with the bagpipes and Kelsey Fenwick and Jayne Pateman singing the national anthem.
Following the declarations of office by Justice Peter Bishop, Mayor Nuttall had a chance to say a few words, thanking outgoing mayor, Anne Krassilowsky as well as past council, and thanking the community as well as the public works department, commending them on their snowplowing.
“This year, with the cooperation of council, our budget has to be according to our needs, not our wants,” said Nuttall. “I would like services to remain as they are with no increase in user fees.”
Council then had a chance to say a few words to their family, friends, and public, opening with Brian Collins and some good-natured ribbing of the new mayor to start the year.
Following the speeches, council moved ahead with some formal matters, including which committees and boards they were appointed to, as well as the Deputy Mayor appointment.
Following the motions, the floor was opened to outgoing mayor, Anne Krassilowsky and city manager, Arie Hoogenboom. With some very heart-felt words, Krassilowsky thanked many people individually, including her former councillors, her staff, and many others.
“It has been a great partnership, and it’s a partnership that I wish on this council as they move forward,” said Krassilowsky.
With tears in the eyes, Krassilowsky wished the best to the new mayor and council, and walked off the stage to a standing ovation.
First regular meeting of council will be held on Monday, December 13, with Committee of the Whole, beginning at 7 pm in Council Chambers.
