At the annual meeting of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) in Sudbury on Dec. 2, the very prestigious Faculty/Preceptor Award of Excellence was presented to local doctor, Yvon Gagnon.
“Each year, the MD students and the residency program students vote on the physician clinical teachers, or preceptors, and essentially, this is recognizing excellency in teaching,” says NOSM Dean, Dr. Roger Strasser. “This is an award recognizing Yvon Gagnon’s excellence as a clinical teacher.”
The annual award winners are chosen by students nominating teachers, including testimonials, which all go to a board for consideration. There are 28 different communities that take students for teaching, and only four physicians receive the award per year.
“It’s very nice that it comes from the students, the people that you work with. I find it intensifies the value of the award, because to me it speaks volumes of the students having enjoyed their time,” says Gagnon. “It’s their way of saying thank you, so you get a sense that you had an impact somewhere so that’s good.”
The Vermilion Bay based doctor receives two students twice per year for teaching, as well as students in between. The total is roughly four and a half months of teaching time per year.
“I’d like to congratulate Dr. Gagnon on receiving this meritorious award,” remarks Dean Strasser. “I think it reflects the high regard that the NOSM learners have for him and his enthusiasm for medicine and for teaching.”
