The Dryden Ice Dogs continued their winning ways over the weekend venturing to Duluth where they grabbed two games from the struggling Clydesdales.
With powerplay development foremost in Clint Mylymok’s recent commentary on the team’s mid-season effort, the head coach saw a bit of what he was looking for on Friday when his club scored on three of nine man advantages in their 5-2 win.
Beau DiLoreto (Lobreau, Crum) notched an early goal in the first period before Dwight Lee (Vadnais, Greene) would mark a powerplay goal to bring the Dogs up to a 2-0 lead before the end of the first period.
The end of the second period would see a flurry of Dryden scoring as Brendan McClellan (Linner, Lee) would score, followed by two consecutive powerplay goals courtesy of blueliner Tom Kuhn (Pelletier) and Jon Mitchell (McClellan, Lee).
On Saturday, back-up goalie Brett Timmerman would give Ian Perrier the night off, facing 18 shots and collecting the 2-1 win.
Captain Jon Mitchell (McClellan, Linner) came up with a shorthanded goal midway through the first period. Early in the second period Thomas Greene (Kuhn, Mitchell) buried a powerplay goal to enter the final period with a 2-0 lead. Duluth responded with a single goal in the third but could not force overtime.
The Dryden Ice Dogs return to home ice Wednesday, Dec. 15 to face the mighty Fort Frances Lakers who have, in the space of a week, dropped from first to fourth place in the SIJHL’s volatile standings after a pair of losses to the Thunder Bay North Stars.
The weekend ahead proves to be a difficult test for the Ice Dogs who hope to catch the North Stars dreaming of sugarplums in two games at Fort William Gardens.
The North Stars trail the first place Wisconsin Wilderness by a single point in the standings, followed by Dryden, just one point behind them.
