The Dryden 2010 Centennial Committee is hoping that profits from the summer’s events can be used as seed money for future events, projects and paid forward to worthy local groups.
Centennial Chair, Mary Helie, outlined the committee’s accomplishments over the last year, and reported a profit of $28,000 at the most recent meeting of council Dec. 13.
The Centennial Committee asked permission from council to create the “pay it forward” campaign which will include the distribution of $2,500 to ICAS (International Convention), $1,000 to a Confederation College bursury and $500 to the Vermilion Bay Cadet Corps.
Also added to the campaign would be gateway signage, in the amount of $4,000.  Helie says she would like new signs posted in the community with Dryden’s Centennial logo attached to each.
The committee didn’t stop there, but also asked permission for seed money to continue some of the hit events to carry over from Centennial.
Requested was $5,000 for Rockin’ the River, $5,000 for the Children’s Street Fair, and $5,000 for another arena dance, all proposed to take place throughout the month of August.  Finishing up the wish list is $5,000 in seed money to continue the very successful Oktoberfest.
Helie says over $500,000 was spent on Centennial events, with $154,000 in funding coming from Heritage Canada, $50,000 from the City of Dryden and $296,000 from donations, ticket and merchandise sales.
Helie also reported that over 25,000 people took part in Centennial events, including 7,000 over the two-day air show and 5,000 for Homecoming Week.
The committee is expected to hear back from council with permission by next week.
