Dryden mayor and council have made some decisions to implement new street names in the community.
With the addition of the newly created Centennial Business Park behind the government building and new street running through, council decided to look at some of the existing street names in the vicinity.
A report was put forward to council at the September 13 Committee of the Whole, but due to some technical issues, was not able to be passed as a by-law.
The streets in question include the newly created street in the Centennial Business Park, proposed to be named Centennial Drive, as well as the recently created extension in the Norwill Subdivision that extends from Heather Drive. Additional to these two new streets, the existing section of Wice Road that extends east of Colonization will also be renamed.
The extension of new road in the Norwill subdivision will be named Heather Drive, as it is an extension of the existing Heather Drive, and the section of Wice Road east of Colonization running between the fairgrounds and the Petro Pass will be renamed to Scott Street to be continuous with the existing Scott Street west of Colonization.
After plenty of debate, the new street that runs parallel to Highway 17 behind the Government Building to the back of IGA and turning into Pioneer St. was originally slated to be named Centennial Drive. Council debated the logic of this decision, adding that there are plenty of examples of one street with a variety of different names and the confusion that causes.
Most councillors were in favour of naming the new street Pioneer St., as it is an extension of the existing Pioneer Street.
Councillor Sid Wintle brought up the point of large truck traffic driving through the residential neighbourhood of Pioneer due to confusion of having to travel to Hwy 601 for access to the industrial area, but the overall reasoning of extending the name of Pioneer won over the council.
Naming of the new streets will facilitate identification of future lots in the two new developments, as well as renaming the fairgrounds area of Wice Road will avoid confusion with Wice Road located off Grand Trunk Avenue.
The city is also looking at a cost and convenience factor of renaming the selected city streets, with reducing cost associated with updating the 911 program as well as the convenience of accurate street names for emergency services.
