The Dryden Ice Dogs had a busy weekend, winning two games against the Duluth Clydesdales Friday and Saturday night.
Jon Mitchell would score the first goal in Friday’s game, not even three minutes into the first period. Duluth evened up the score at 1-1 by the end of the first.
Ben McClellan scored the second goal for Dryden at 1:25 in the second, with Dallas Crum finishing the second period with a third goal.
Ice Dogs had the lead going into third period at 3-1, with Dallas Allaire scoring the fourth goal at 4:51 in the third and Brendan Wertanen made the fifth and final Ice Dogs goal at 14:52. Duluth scored their second and final goal at 19:47 in the third.
Saturday brought the Dogs another win over Duluth with Ben McClellan making the first goal in the first period at 2:08. Duluth tied it up at 1-1 at 12:59 in the first.
Second period saw a goal by Ryan Lobreau at 9:35, another by Bryce Maggrah at 13:49 and Ben McClellan finished up the second period with a power play goal at 19:24.
Going into the third period with a 4-1 lead, Ian Schachte finished the game with another power play goal at 18:50 making the final score 5-1 for the Dogs.
Ian Perrier played net both games, stopping 26 of 28 shots faced on Friday, and 26 of 27 attempts on goal in Saturday’s game.
Dryden Ice Dogs Coach, Clint Mylymok, says the team really stepped up to the plate overall, with better shots on net and the defencemen stepping in and taking more opportunities to help win the games.
“We’re getting contributions from all lines, not just one so that tells me some guys are starting to pick up their games and learn how to play Junior A hockey.”
Mylymok says some players have been in a slump for a while, and have really stepped up their game lately with goal scoring over the weekend, as well as players putting their practice game skills to better use in regular play.
“We got some goal scoring from guys that we need to contribute more, and that’s where we got some help from on the weekend,” says Mylymok.
Having some previous power play issues from the team, the weekend games showed definite improvement. Scoring one power play goal on Friday’s game, as well as two more in Saturday’s game, the team is showing their will to win.
“That has been an Achilles heel for us in our other games,” says Mylymok. “It’s amazing what a power play goal does for your bench and in terms of a team. It’s a bonus goal.”
Mylymok says the next three games coming are huge for the Ice Dogs, and there is a definite need to beat the coming teams to move up in the stats in the SIJHL.
“We have to quit hovering around the .500 mark and build up our win column,” comments Mylymok. “We have to try and show that we are contenders for this league as well, and I’m not going to be happy with being the team in the middle of the pack.”
The Ice Dogs go head to head with SIJHL first place leaders Fort Frances Lakers on Wednesday, November 17, followed by head to head weekend games with second place leaders, the Thunder Bay North Stars, on Fri., Nov. 19 and Sat., Nov. 20 at the Dryden Memorial Arena. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. for all three games.
