The Dryden Rifle and Pistol Club has emerged as the new owner of the Barclay Hall property.
The former City of Dryden property, deemed surplus in recent years, officially changed hands in late September, purchased by the owners and operators of the property directly to the north.
Dryden Rifle and Pistol Club President Howard Gamble says the club’s interest in the property was mainly to secure a stronger foothold at their present location on Barclay Hall Rd. just south of the Barclay Landfill.
“It’s just to add to our landmass and to give a buffer-zone between our shooting range and our neighbour,” said Gamble. “If somebody else had bought it and built a house there it would be right up against our fence and they probably wouldn’t be happy. We don’t even intend to develop it in the foreseeable future.”
Gamble says the club has yet to decide whether the Barclay Hall will be re-opened to host community events and activities as it once did.
The property’s purchase was made possible by a sizable donation from the estate of Dryden Rifle and Pistol Club member Hugh Hettema. Hettema’s brother and sister-in-law travelled to the community from the Netherlands this past July to bear witness to Hugh’s legacy — now found on a plaque at the Barclay Hall site.
“He (Hettema) was a very nice man who lived just north of Vermilion Bay and belonged to our club for quite a number of years,” said Gamble. “He was instrumental in donating and doing stuff for the club.”
Current Dryden Rifle and Pistol Club member John Kennedy also provided a very substantial donation/loan toward the purchase of the Barclay Hall property.
“We’ve considered it a loan, with full intentions of paying it back,” said Gamble. “He (Kennedy) didn’t ask for it, but we as club members and executive didn’t feel right accepting that size of a gift.”
