Demolition began last week on a bit of Dryden’s paper-making past.
Contractors began the task of tearing down Mineral Technologies (Mintech) PCC plant — a vestige of the mill’s papermaking past.
The Mintech facility produced precipitated calcium carbonate, a chalk-like substance used as filler in the paper-making process.
Mintech’s Mike Aaviku says the facility was constructed in 1989 and employed up to eight people until paper-making operations were suspended in late 2008 to focus solely on pulp production.
“When Domtar elected to cease paper-making operations in Dryden, we became superfluous at that time,” said Aaviku. “There was no longer a need for our product. Unfortunately it’s taken us until now to work out the particulars for actually demolishing the plant.”
