Obituaries — 06 October 2010
Peacefully at her residence at Princess Court in Dryden, Lena Ellen McEwan, age 95 passed away on Sept. 26th with family at her side.
Born Jan. 10, 1915 in Expanse, Saskatchewan to Daniel and Clara Booi, the family moved to homestead North of Quibell in 1923.
Lena married Allan James McEwan on March 17, 1933. They also homesteaded north of Quibell. This property was purchased for the vast sum of $1.25. There the couple built a home and garage. During this time they raised a family, built boats, re-canvassed canoes, and worked on cars, outboards, and anything with a motor. In 1956 tragedy struck when the garage burnt down. Allan and Lena then moved to Quibell where they built a home and garage, known as McEwan’s Repair Service, which they ran for over 36 years. Lena was often seen pumping gas and keeping the books.
Lena was well known for her knitting (especially socks), cross-stitched pictures, gardening, flowers, her pies at Christmas and her rhubarb cake. Many will remember her great love of berry picking, whether it was blueberries, wild strawberries, cranberries and raspberries. She was known to recycle things before it became popular. If there was music being played, Lena was most likely dancing!
She also had a great fondness for dolls, of any size or kind.
The McEwan’s helped found the Quibell Community Hall where she and Allan “ran the shows” every Wednesday night. They would pick up the film from the Quibell Station, sell tickets, show the film and clean the Hall afterwards. Lena also enjoyed being a part of the Quibell Ladies Craft Club for many years.
In later years she attended the Happy Go Lucky Seniors group with her good friend Verna Leutschaft. The two also attended the Craft Club at Evangelical Free Church in Vermilion Bay. Lena also attended the Vermilion Bay United Church.
Lena leaves behind her children Louise (Gus) Marion, Dryden, Lorraine (Tom) Taylor, Vermilion Bay, Ethel (Henry) Bolin, Dryden and Ivan (Judy) McEwan, Quibell; 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren, sister Louella Drury of Barr Head, Alberta, two sisters-in-law Myrtle Booi, Vermilion Bay and Francis Booi, Dryden. She will also be sadly missed by her good friend Astrid Allan of Vermilion Bay.
A Funeral Service to celebrate the life of Lena will be held Friday, October 1st at 11 a.m. in the Vermilion Bay United Church with Pastor Doug Brown officiating. Interment of ashes will take place in the Quibell Cemetery at a later date. Luncheon will be at the Happy Go Lucky Seniors Centre following the service.
