Eagles finish season with 31-13 loss to East Kildonan

A 31-13 loss still seemed more like a victory for the Dryden Eagles Football team in their final gridiron engagement of the season, Oct. 22.
Hosting one of the top-ranked teams in their AA division, the 6-1, second place Kildonan East Reivers spent their first few moments at Harry McMaster field digging a near insurmountable hole for the Dryden High School Team to battle their way out from.
Down 17 points just moments into the game, the  Eagles turned up their aggression and execution to match Kildonan East for the duration.
“I was really impressed with how our guys dug their heels in, set their jaw and played hard football all the way through,” said Eagles Assistant Coach Neil McLeod. “Typically this season when we get behind like that we’ve struggled. They’re learning to fight from behind and it’s great. There was a lot of growth today.”
Jeremy Euler hammered in a four yard touchdown, while Josh Reid later connected with a pass from Ryan Martel to run close to 50 yards to score.
Since the Eagles’ last appearance on home turf, quarterback Ryan Martel was taking more opportunities to pass the ball.
McLeod says the Grade 10 Martel, among others are going to be strong assets next season.
The Eagles said a fond farewell to Grade 12 players who suited up for the last time with the team including: Ryan Nelson, Ryan Hansson, Alex Calvert, Michael Therrien, Andrew Langlais, Jhan Czajkowski, Phil Smith, Michael Lampshire and Josh Moreau.
“We’re losing 10 fabulous seniors, most of them have been with us for four years,” said McLeod “Most of our captains are gone, but we have some fabulous young guys — Tanner Russell is going to be an incredibly strong free safety; Calum Cheesequay who has been playing an important position (defensive back) like he’s a 12th grader, he’s only in Grade 10; we’ve got Travis Potter who’s doing a great job. We’ve got some great building blocks and we’re looking forward to the next two years.”
