With only having their doors open for two and a half months, the McKenzie Forest Products’ Hudson mill is again shutting down.
The sawmill located in Hudson, ON, currently employs approximately 65 people and will begin layoffs on Friday.
“We’re shutting down, and we’re going to look towards the springtime to see if the markets are going to pick up,” reports Don Fenelon, mill manager.
Fenelon says that with the cost of lumber dropping dramatically recently, the Hudson mill simply cannot compete in the market that is out there right now.
With this being the second mass layoff since 2008 for McKenzie Forest Products, mill senior staff are fearful of the loss of employees come spring if the potential startup does happen.
“Some of them left jobs to come back here, some of them can go back to the jobs they were in, but some of them might have to go and look for new jobs now,” Fenelon says.
The sawmill is scheduled to go down Friday, August 27, with the planer continuing to run until the rough inventory is processed and loaded for shipping.
Final shutdown date is expected for September 3, 2010. Luckily, current operating staff should have enough hours to qualify for Unemployment Benefits.
Depending on the market prices and owner Ken Buchanan, Hudson may see another startup next year.
