Very rarely does one find an entrepreneur that has yet to reach Grade Six but on Saturday, Aug. 14, King Street was full of them as the BizKids set up shop beside Wilson’s Business Solutions to sell their homemade products.
The Northwest Business Centre held a BizKids camp for kids ages 9-12 to teach them the “values, attitudes, qualities and skills needed to be successful in today’s economy.”
The week long camp that ran from Aug. 9-13 at the Dryden Confederation College campus, allowed campers to get a basic overview of business and entrepreneurship through games and presentations from local entrepreneurs. The kids chose a business and through the lessons they learned during the week, they built a product and marketed them on the street.
Keely Newstead, a local entrepreneur, got the idea of creating homemade dog treats when he and his mom were surfing the web for product ideas.
“My mom called me to look at the computer and my dog walked into the room and I thought why don’t we make dog treats.”
The very edible treats have common ingredients such as oats, cornmeal, beef bouillon and other secret ingredients custom to Newstead’s recipe.
Nine young kids created products to be marketed during the BizKids Market Day and all the proceeds made during the day were giving back to the campers for their hard work and success.
