As Dryden city council gives the Oath of Office to its two newest councillors, there was some concern over the choice of the selection process. With five former mayors and councillors allowing their name to stand to fill the vacancies on council, Sid Wintle and Keith Sveinson were the chosen two following a drawing of names from a paper bag in replacement of a voting concept.“I think it would have been better had the existing councillors actually voted on us, but picking it out of a hat works for me,” said Keith Sveinson.
“I had great difficulty with names being picked out of a hat. I thought any decisions made for the town should me made for a reason,” says Sid Wintle. “Nothing is ever equal so there should have been some criteria set out, but that’s life.”
Although both new councillors expressed issue with the format, they were both happy to be chosen, and feel it’s the least they could do for the community.
“When they announced what the criteria was, former councillors and mayors, it quickly occurred to me that there was a limited number of those kind of people,” relays Sveinson when asked why he let his name stand for election. “I thought, well, somebody’s got to step up to the plate, so I put my name in.”
Wintle, in agreement, says that when working for the community, you should step up when needed.
Councillor Brian Collins announced to council “They’re all to be congratulated and I wish the two that won the best of luck and thank the three whose names weren’t drawn.”
With only a short term to sit on council, both councillors are happy to be able to assist the city, but neither have any plans on running in the fall 2010 municipal elections.
