Obituaries — 07 July 2010

It is with great sadness we announce the death of Alex “Ecky” Fleming, age 73, on Friday June 18th at the Dryden Regional Health Centre surrounded by his loving family.

Ecky was born at Whitbank, Transvaal, South Africa, 2nd son of Bessie and Tom Fleming.

Following Toms death in 1941, Bessie met and married Robert “Bud” Owen. The family sailed from South Africa to England then on to Scotland were they lived for a short time. In 1946 they sailed across the Atlantic to Canada landing in Halifax Oct. 31, 1946. From here they traveled to Dryden, making it their home. It was here that his brother Lewis was born.

Ecky was educated in the Dryden school system. At age 17 he joined the RCAF and served for 3 years. After a short time as a milkman for Groveside Dairy, he was employed at the Dryden Paper Company. He eventually became a Millwright and later the Fire Chief at the Mill. He retired in 1997 after 40 years of service. During his working life he traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, Hawaii, United States, Scotland and England. After retirement he spent winters for 10 years at Long Island Village on the coast of Texas until poor health forced him to stay home.

Ecky was a 50 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63, a Past President of Union Local 105, and a member of the Go-Getters.

Ecky was predeceased by his parents Tom Fleming, Bessie Owen and Bud Owen, his brothers Bill Fleming and Lewis Owen, his beloved granddaughter Jasmine Fediuk and the love of his life his miniature Schnauzer Skooter. He is survived by his wife Mary Jane, children Shelley Fediuk (Barry), Brad Boyko (Sandra), Penny Boyko (Bruce), grand children Carrie Fediuk (Ron), Ali Boyko, Geoff Boyko, John Hutchison, Graham Hutchison, great granddaughter Taylor Webb and his friend of 65 years John Swanson. Also survived by many nieces and nephews and a son Tom Fleming and his family.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Ashes will be placed in the columbarium at a later date. A celebration of his life was held at the Legion on Tues. June 22. If friends so desire donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke or to a charity of your choice through the Dryden Community Funeral Home.
