News — 09 June 2010

Most people hope to see the age of 90, happy and healthy and for many, that date has already come and gone.
More than 30 nonaganerians (people 90 years-old or older) joined family and friends at the Go-Getters centre for lunch and special presentations on Saturday, June 5.
Mayor Anne Krassilowsky presented the five new inductees to the nonagenarian group with certificates and birthday wishes.
MPP Howard Hampton was also in attendance to pass along large birthday cards to the recent 90 year-olds.
MP Greg Rickford couldn’t be in Dryden for the event but sent certificates to be passed out as well.
Many birthday goers had interesting stories to share including couple Ken and Gladys Davis. The two just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year. Ken is 94 years-old and Gladys is 92 years-old.
Many spoke of their travels to Dryden during the depression in the 1930s and how they came to set up and start a new life in the area.
Many of the nonaganerians are still avid members of the Go-Getters Club, dining, playing cards and volunteering at the centre  while others still are quite active in the community.
The celebration also mentioned and congratulated Vernon Rutter who celebrated his 101st birthday in May, though he couldn’t be in attendance at the birthday party.
A  dozen or so nongenarian members were not present at the celebration but were honoured none-the-less.
The Go-Getters have celeberated the nonagenarians annually for the past eight years at the Centre with more and more 90-year-olds and over being honoured at the celebration.
