The Eagles girls’ soccer team fell one goal short of moving on to the final stage of the NorWOSSA finals against Fort Frances on Wednesday, May 26 in Dryden.
The girls fell behind early when the Muskies scored from a scramble in front of the Eagles net and with numerous chances to score in the second half, the girls couldn’t capitalize.
Coach Carlos Raposo says it’s important to focus on the game at hand.
“I think we were looking beyond the game to start with. It’s always dangerous when you do that. I?think Fort Frances came to play and we couldn’t get going in the first half.”
It was the first loss of the season for the girls as they entered the NorWOSSA playoffs with two wins and four ties against the Muskies and the Beaver Brae Broncos.
The girls picked up the pace in the second half, setting themselves up for a chance to equalize but were unsuccessful.
“The fate wasn’t with us. We tried every side of the net we could except for the centre and that was the difference. I think we were just a little bit flat to start the game and Fort Frances was ready.”
Although it was a disappointing end to the season, Raposo says that he’s happy with the girls’ play throughout the season, especially battling injuries and trying new positions.
The Eagles season is almost over for the school year and the Athletic Awards banquet is June 10. Tickets are available in the Phys Ed office at the Dryden High School.
Cash Calendars are still available from any Eagles athlete or in the main office at DHS.
