The Eagles girls’ soccer team was one point short of getting a bye to the NorWOSSA finals on Wednesday after finishing the third round of the regular season with two ties against the Beaver Brae Broncos and the Fort Frances Muskies.
The team faced off against the Broncos in Kenora on Wednesday, May 19 and came away with a 1-1 tie, with Lauren Shoguchi getting the lone goal for the Eagles.
The same result was posted for game two against the Muskies as the Eagles conceded a goal and rookie Haylee Whitney posted one for the team.
The two ties gave them 10 points, one point behind the Broncos and eight points ahead of the Muskies, putting the Eagles and the Muskies in the semi-final on Wednesday.
Coach Carlos Raposo says with the teams being so close, neither team will be a push over for the trophy.
“We’re pretty close. I think it comes down to the team that makes the least amount of mistakes is the one that wins. We have to play a smart game against Fort Frances and make sure we don’t make any mistakes.”
The team will have home advantage going into the NorWOSSA finals. The Eagles’ only two wins of the season were done on home turf and they’re looking to repeat those games.
“As long as we get the proper rest, I think at home is good for us. It’s always an advantage if you’re at home, you have the home fans so I think in that aspect, we should be favoured to beat Fort Frances but we still have to win the game. We still have to play it smart.”
