Born: February 15, 1917 to Joseph and Mary (Belle) Ernewein in Walkerton, ON. and passed away on November 25, 2009 at Princess Court.
In 1919 the family moved to Pangman, Sask. and in 1921 they relocated to Eton Rugby eventually settling in Dryden. George attended Albert St. School and high school in Dryden and in 1939 he took training in diesel engineering in Los Angeles, California. He worked as a mechanic for local garages in Sioux Lookout and Dryden and as a powerhouse operator for Dryden Paper Co. In 1952 he built and operated Riverside Service Station, later becoming the Bulk Oil Agent for Husky Oil. In 1967 he became the first sewage treatment plant operator for the Town of Dryden later moving to the position of water treatment plant operator retiring from this position in 1982.
One of his passions in life was flying and he obtained his private pilot’s licence and owned his own Aronca Champ that he enjoyed flying for several years. He also was involved in local politics and served on the Barclay Council for a few years. George was active with local clubs – Knights of Columbus, Chamber of Commerce, Dryden Lions Club, Loyal Order of the Moose, Canadian Order of Foresters and Dryden Flying Club.
He married Maguerite (Peg) Venus in 1940 and was predeceased by her on July 19, 2007 after 67 years of marriage. They worked hard together sharing their time and talents with family and friends. George is survived by son Bob Ernewein and daughter Bet Williams (Bob), grandchildren Tim (Mary) Ernewein, Terry (Tracey) Ernewein, Jennifer Ernewein, Liska (Russ) Stafford, Patrick (Monique) McArthur and Lindsey (Jim Dwojak) and by 10 great grandchildren. Brothers – Francis Ernewein, Clair (Esther) Ernewein and Don Ernewein (June Adduno) and sister-in-law Garnet Jones of Kenora as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
George was a resident of Princess Court for the past three years.
Funeral Mass for George Ernewein was held on Friday, December 4, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church with Father Al Campeau officiating. Interment to take place at a later date.
