In loving memory of Ruth Emily Gould born at Dryden, Ontario on April 9, 1918, who passed away peacefully at a High River hospital shortly after arriving from her senior’s residence at Nanton, Alberta where her son Fred and his wife Karen reside.
Born Ruth Norgate to Charles and ’Bella Norgate of Dryden and Van Horne Township into a family which included her older sisters Ellen Tuckey of Oxdrift and Isabel Anderson of the farm just north of Dryden, and younger siblings Lily Johnston of New Westminster, BC, Tom Norgate of Dryden who is the only surviving sibling, Betty Boyce of Red Deer, Alberta whose husband Charles still survives and Francis Norgate of Elkford, BC whose wife Jean still survives.
She was predeceased by her husband Frank Gould, with whom she lived at Van Horne township south of Dryden until 1976, at Manor Saskatchewan until 1984, at Westbridge, BC until 2004, and at Nanton Alberta until her passing.
Ruth is survived by her four children Joyce Sottile of Pass Lake, Ontario, Fred of Nanton, Alberta, Bruce of Hinton, Alberta, and Len of Brampton, Ontario, by eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Many longtime residents of Dryden will recall the sweet corn and tomatoes which Frank and Ruth raised and sold locally throughout the period they farmed at Dryden, and perhaps the well-kept flower gardens at their farm, which were her labour of joy. Ruth’s knowledge and love of horticulture, combined with her constant hard work and initiatve, contributed greatly to the success of the farming enterprise. Many others fortunate to have been invited to a meal at her table will recall her skill at cooking the many natural foods available to her because of her knowledge and hard work, while many in Van Horne township will remember her as the afternoon school bus driver, a task which she carried out efficiently and safely for many years.
Her children and many of the other attendees will always remember her grace and charm as she danced the opening waltz with Frank at their 60th wedding anniversary celebration at Westbridge. She was always a loyal and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and we loved her greatly for all that she gave us in her long and well-lived time on earth.
A memorial will be held at Nanton on October 24. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
